Spelunky, also known as "Spelunky HD", due to it being a reimagining of a 2009 game by the same name, now commonly reffered to as "[url=https://www.spelunkyworld.com/original.html]Spelunky Classic ", is a game by indie darling and design mastermind Derek "Fuck" Yu. That nickname is not one he thought up, it's just what many fans of this game, its 2009 classic variant, and the surprise 2020 sequel "Spelunky 2" are likely to mutter under their breaths after their 50th run in a row ends with them being "spelunked". This phrase, which does not, in fact, refer to cave exploration, is a euphemistic name given to the act of getting pummeled by Spelunky's high difficulty and sheer insanity. These depths your spelunker (of which there are several to unlock) treads are brutal and unwelcoming, few friendly faces are to be found here and those that are, are just as likely to find any excuse to run at you at Mach 10 speeds, like your average Cyberpunk 2077 crack addict with a Sandevistan, riddling your face with Shotgun pellet impact holes in the process. Sometimes, your deaths and the predicaments you find yourself in will be less than fair, but Spelunky HD's runs are mercifully short enough to not let the impact sting for too long (unless you're doing one of Spelunky's infamously gruelling achievements, of which I've done every single one (yes, I do need mental help, thanks for asking <3). Spelunky is a merciless piece of art, a classic man vs. environment silent narrative, like Indiana Jones, if Indy were a big-nosed mute, who had an insatiable enough masochistic desire to make the average user of Twitter cower in fear. Your protagonist (and yourself, by proxy) constantly subject yourselves to unforgiving, procedurally generated tests of ingenuity, game knowledge and platforming endurance, in this way, Spelunky is a fantastic game. Some buggyness here or there on higher refresh rate monitors, the lack of steam cloud intergration, some annoying, RNG-filled achievements, somewhat annoying character unlock conditions and frequently strange stomp mechanic behavior when compared to Spelunky 2 can only mar the ingenuity on display so much. I was surprised to find that I hadn't ever written a review for Spelunky HD, but perhaps I had felt it redundant before. If you want, feel free to check out my Spelunky 2 review here. Many Thanks To Mossmouth And Derek Yu For The Laughs, Stockholm Syndrome & The Therapy Bills That I Will Now Have To Fund Through Selling My Body <3

Right, so you've decided to play this absolute death trap masquerading as a video game. Let me tell you something - this isn't a game, it's a bloody psychological experiment designed to make you question your life choices and sanity. Picture this: You're wandering through these gorgeous caves, feeling like Indiana Jones's less talented cousin, picking up shiny trinkets like some magpie with a PlayStation. "Ooh, look at me!" you think, "I'm collecting treasure!" Then BAM! The universe decides to punch you in the metaphorical nuts. You grab a golden idol - because of course you do - and suddenly the entire cave system goes into full-on apocalypse mode. A boulder the size of Eric Cartmans's ego comes hurtling towards you, and you're doing this pathetic little dance of survival. "Lucky jump!" you might think. But no. This game doesn't do luck. This game does BRUTAL. One moment you're feeling like a hero, the next you're being yeeted into oblivion by a spider that's apparently been training with SAS. Then a shopkeeper - who seems to have consumed approximately 17 espressos and is having a complete mental breakdown - starts firing a shotgun like he's auditioning for a Michael Bay film. And just when you think, "Well, this can't get worse," the game says, "Hold my beer" and launches an arrow directly into your face. Not to the side, not near your face - Directly. In. Your. Face. The genius - and I use that term with maximum sarcasm - is that everything is your fault. That boulder? Your fault. The spiders? Your fault. The maniac shopkeeper? Yep, you guessed it - Your. Bloody. Fault. It's like the game designers sat in a room and thought, "How can we make players feel simultaneously incompetent, frustrated, and weirdly addicted?" And by God, they've succeeded. This game is an existential crisis with pixel graphics. A middle finger to the concept of fair play. A testament to the fact that in this digital world, you are nothing more than a puppet whose strings are controlled by a sadistic game designer who probably laughs while drinking chamomile tea. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. But only if you enjoy having your self-esteem ground into a fine powder and blown into the wind of digital humiliation. Would rage quit again.

One of the best rouguelike games I've played. I've got 40+ hours played and still haven't beaten it, but the gameplay loop is so fun that I still keep returning. There's a sequel, but I don't think I've exhausted this one yet.

Spelunky is roguelike unlike any other. It almost feels that the game has a plan for how you die every time. And believe me, you will die. Yet how you die is unique for every run you play. The game is procedurally generated every time you start a new game, which makes adds some layer and fun. The controls are pretty great and feel very fluid. What's great is that when you die, it's your fault, even if you don't think so at first. If you rush the levels, you're bound to make mistakes. But even taking too long in the level results in a certain punishment. Part of the whole game is punishment itself. You're pretty much punished for everything. But nonetheless, I love this game. And you'll see why if you play it.
