Right, so you've decided to play this absolute death trap masquerading as a video game. Let me tell you something - this isn't a game, it's a bloody psychological experiment designed to make you question your life choices and sanity. Picture this: You're wandering through these gorgeous caves, feeling like Indiana Jones's less talented cousin, picking up shiny trinkets like some magpie with a PlayStation. "Ooh, look at me!" you think, "I'm collecting treasure!" Then BAM! The universe decides to punch you in the metaphorical nuts. You grab a golden idol - because of course you do - and suddenly the entire cave system goes into full-on apocalypse mode. A boulder the size of Eric Cartmans's ego comes hurtling towards you, and you're doing this pathetic little dance of survival. "Lucky jump!" you might think. But no. This game doesn't do luck. This game does BRUTAL. One moment you're feeling like a hero, the next you're being yeeted into oblivion by a spider that's apparently been training with SAS. Then a shopkeeper - who seems to have consumed approximately 17 espressos and is having a complete mental breakdown - starts firing a shotgun like he's auditioning for a Michael Bay film. And just when you think, "Well, this can't get worse," the game says, "Hold my beer" and launches an arrow directly into your face. Not to the side, not near your face - Directly. In. Your. Face. The genius - and I use that term with maximum sarcasm - is that everything is your fault. That boulder? Your fault. The spiders? Your fault. The maniac shopkeeper? Yep, you guessed it - Your. Bloody. Fault. It's like the game designers sat in a room and thought, "How can we make players feel simultaneously incompetent, frustrated, and weirdly addicted?" And by God, they've succeeded. This game is an existential crisis with pixel graphics. A middle finger to the concept of fair play. A testament to the fact that in this digital world, you are nothing more than a puppet whose strings are controlled by a sadistic game designer who probably laughs while drinking chamomile tea. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. But only if you enjoy having your self-esteem ground into a fine powder and blown into the wind of digital humiliation. Would rage quit again.

Took me 24 hours to beat the game once, without the use of shortcuts or alternate paths. It has changed the way I approach situations, and has forever improved my reflexes and problem solving skills. Gamepad is recommended for optimal play. It's a wonderful game with tonnes of love, I've never encountered an error during gameplay. Don't hit printscreen, though, because that crashes the game lol. Lost a screencap of my first big win that way. Haven't tried the sequel, but, with how much content this game holds, I won't need to for a long time. 10/10, watch out for piranhas!

Spelunky is roguelike unlike any other. It almost feels that the game has a plan for how you die every time. And believe me, you will die. Yet how you die is unique for every run you play. The game is procedurally generated every time you start a new game, which makes adds some layer and fun. The controls are pretty great and feel very fluid. What's great is that when you die, it's your fault, even if you don't think so at first. If you rush the levels, you're bound to make mistakes. But even taking too long in the level results in a certain punishment. Part of the whole game is punishment itself. You're pretty much punished for everything. But nonetheless, I love this game. And you'll see why if you play it.

Best rouge-like ever made and one of the best games ever, period. Design is beyond exceptional and there is almost no fluff to pad this game or make it overstay it's welcome. One of the few rouge-likes that I believe has actually achieved a fair difficulty that's rewarding as well; there is no way to cheese this with a run breaking build or just luck in general so you will feel the accomplishment of success in full. The game is more about mastering yourself and your true knowledge of the world you travel than it is about twitch reflexes or optimizing builds which sets it apart from most others. It's so good I don't even think the sequel can really capture what made it great, and that's still a pretty good game. It's worth it.

Changed what I look for in a game. Opened my eyes to the potential of roguelikes. A nearly endless treasure-trove of surprises and joys and inescapable nightmare scenarios which were, invariably, all your own fault. You did it to yourself, you silly goose, and now you've just got to start it all over again. Excruciating. Bliss. Spelunky.
