UPDATE: "legacy" is available as a "Beta" option in the game properties. Given Legacy is still available, I can say this game is still worth the asking price, if still impossible to 100% complete. I am giving it a Recommend because I grinded the pre-Apocalypse version of this game for 220 hours and had quite a bit of fun with it, very much worth 5 bucks if you can play that specific version of it and if you're fine with some of the late game achievements become completely unattainable. I thought there was something quirky and fun about being able to play as a book, and the lady with the pink outfit was kinda cool, though not my favorite. But as you can see from recent news, recent reviews, and the currently available demo, the version of the game I'm referring to is arguably not the same game they're about to replace it with. I'm assuming there will be a toggle in the options to go back to the old version or something. I don't know why they didn't just make an entirely new listing for the new nudity-laden psuedo-sequel rather than proposing it as an update to the game they already found success with. And to be clear my objection is not just "omg boobies and gore bad" because as far as I was able to tell from the new demo, you can actually toggle some of that off. And I spent a good few years of my life drawing some ambiguously sleezy art. My frustration is that the new Spellbook Apocalypse game only superficially resembles the game that I pumped hundreds of hours into, and the new game is much more input intensive, much more active, and is demanding the kind of focus one might have expected from sitting down for a Devil May Cry session rather than the simple pick-up-and-play arcade experience of a Robotron/SmashTV/VampireSurvivors swarm survival game. I don't have the heart to give this game a "Don't Recommend' when I spent so much time in the previous versions of it. Something about that seems very much against what this review system was intended for. But I am only putting this review as a Recommend until the Apocolypse update goes live. At which point I'll probably update it, see if I like it any better, and if it's as much of a switcharoo from the original as the updated demo seems to imply, then I'll adjust my review accordingly. But I just genuinely don't understand this strategy. Surely they sold enough copies to afford getting a new Steam listing for a completely reinvented game? I believe the dev has expressed frustration that they haven't been able to be true to their interests and preferences with their game development thus far, and I sympathize with that, but if the goal is to completely shift tone to be more authentic, then swapping out the old listing while keeping its reviews and player metrics is not ideal, right? If the concern was not keeping around a game that does't represent their new branding, then it might have been better to make the older game unlisted but still downloadable for those who already paid? And I feel pretty sure this isn't what anyone anyone expected despite the Early Access label. I just don't understand.

It's an okay game. Not as good as Vampire Survivors and Halls of tormet. It lacks in content/maps, explanations, and feels like it's a its uncompleted. But it's still a fun game you can sink 10-20 hours into.

A competently priced and made roguelike. Hasn't been updated in 7 months though. Might be dead Jim.

Honestly, I can understand why people are upset that the game is receiving a major shift - However the Developer has been clear about why and what they were hoping to do with it. As a result, they want to keep adding to the game but allowing two version, one as the Legacy and second as something they felt they'd feel more passionate towards making. Its only a 5$ game. People that are upset are, imo, acting entitled. The Dev is learning, and wanting to use a fresh vision. That is fine personally. If you dont like the new version, play the Legacy. I've seen many other cheap Rogue like be fully abandoned with 0 updates. As a result, I think a Dev just adding more even if its a tone shift is better than abandoning and trying to make another quick buck on a "copy". Personally, Game is fine. Its got interesting stuff and what you'd expect from most roguelikes. I hope the devs were able to learn a lot and find what they enjoy making.
