This sequel recreates the feeling of playing sonic adventure for the first time, or maybe Mario 64. The jump to 3d didn't work perfectly for all games in the past, but it mostly works here. Good: * The movement is awesome. It's a combination of the 2d movement from the first game and sonic adventure, allowing dashes (air and ground), wall jumps,, homing onto enemies, and double jumps. These options combined with the level of speed you can attain makes for some amazing platforming. * Levels are large and complex, even though they are now 3d. They feature a ton of different paths and options to travel, and there's not many invisible walls or ceilings; if you can figure out how to get up to some location, the game will let you. * One of my biggest gripes with the first game was the lack of rewards for exploring. This game features collectible art items to make looking around much more fun. * The game brings back powerups, and this time lets you hold on to 3 you can easily switch between. * The music is mostly the same as the first game from what I remember, but it's still great. * The final segment of the game is like a 3d recreation of the final section of the first game, featuring a lot of the same enemies and obstacles. It was really cool seeing it reimagined in 3d. * The levels feature a large number of roads and runways and boosters that allow you to keep moving fast, a welcome change from the fairly constant start-and-stop gameplay from the first game (and sonic the hedgehog) Mid: * There weren't as many powerups in this game, and i generally felt like they didn't change things as much as in the previous game. And since you keep them between levels, once you find whatever set you like there's not much reason to change them up. * There's a 'world map' in the game that has you moving to new levels. Maybe I didn't play enough, but from what I could tell it just created a linear set of levels, so I'm not sure why the map was necessary. Bad: * Despite the name of the game, Spark is only mentioned in passing; the game actually stars Fark, and sort-of antagonist and alternate playable character in the first game. He's similar to Spark, but I found it weird that he was the focus of this game. * The game is very short if you don't plan on replaying levels for better times or to find all the art work. * The storyline is still fairly nonsensical like the first game; some new characters are introduced but they just make things more confusing. * The combat is arguably a step down; bosses and stage enemies with health bars both usually just kinda stand there and take tons of hits without doing much to fight back. And since you can move extremely fast and and have a parry with a very generous window, fights end up being an exercise is button mashing and occasional parries with little risk of dying. I would have preferred more aggression. Ultimately, I feel like this game successfully transitions the gameplay to 3d from the original. But I don't know that someone who hasn't played the original will really appreciate the change, and may find the game a short homage to sonic adventure. That's not bad, but I wish the game had spent more time cooking. Still, if you want a fast-paced platformer you could grind speedruns in, this is a great option.

So, Spark 2 is definitely a BETTER game than the first one, but it's still full of issues all the same. This game is far more inspired by Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes, which I was surprised to find entire level shoutouts to alongside some subtle Shadow the Hedgehog references in the level design, than Spark 1 was with 2D Sonic and Kirby. It's something of a hybrid in terms of design between Adventure 1 and 2 in that it has some open areas that you can explore, but it is mainly a series of corridor levels. I will say it is a lot more fun to traverse the levels than Spark 1 as it feels a lot stronger in terms of general level design, but it still has the weird speed/combat divide that the first game did but even worse. The game actively exacerbates it by awarding medals for doing a good speed run or score run basically for either running past enemies or fighting them. I think that was a pretty wrong-headed decision as it encourages you to basically just ignore half of the game design at any given time. Personally, after completing the game normally, I don't really have any desire to go back and get the medals just based on my experience trying to get them in the first level. It's one of those ranks that requires you to play better than perfect and basically break the level design with speed running or score running tricks that would just make the game unfun to play. The powerups face the same problem they did in Spark 1 where most of them feel nigh identical to each other. Plus, there's only 5 powerups in the whole game, and they're all accessible in every level which makes me question what the point of the system even is other than a cosmetic alteration. Again, it feels Kirby inspired but missing the uniqueness of the abilities and the ability to manipulate the environment with them. I stuck with one power for the majority of the whole game, and I didn't feel like I was missing out. I consider that to be a problem. Combat continues to be a joke. It's even easier than before despite the focus on the parry system. Literally every boss can be beaten by button mashing light attack with the occasional heavy to build your combo and then spam your shield whenever they attack. Only the final boss makes you deviate from that pattern at all, but even he was easy one I learned to be a bit more cautious. I wasn't especially encouraged to engage with it in the actual levels and skipped past most of the enemies. Despite the Heroes influence, I'm glad Feperd didn't make forced combat sections outside of a couple of pretty weak minibosses. The presentation was strong with the aesthetic translated very well to 3D, with a lovely cel-shaded look to the graphics, though the lack of voice acting felt wrong given the homages to 3D Sonic games. In fact the audio was a bit odd. The music was obviously great as Feperd continues to work with great artists, however the sound effects were pretty inconsistent. Some stuff was silent when there should have been sound for emphasis, especially in cutscenes. Overall, Spark 2 was a big improvement over Spark 1, and definitely fun for a playthrough, but it was still marred with problems in the game design. I would recommend it, but it's a very weak recommendation. Looking forward to Spark 3, though. It seems like the issues may have been ironed out in the next one.

It could be a bit janky at times, but ultimately I had a lot of fun with it. Boss fights slightly reminded me of Sekiro with the parry system being the best way to fight them as it increases your damage the more you successfully do it, letting you melt them once you reach the maximum. Soundtrack is also pretty good, especially the boss themes. Level design was unique and a lot of the visuals reminded me of Sonic Adventure 2, namely the space stages reminding me of the Ark stages in that game. Definitely rough around the edges, but again, I enjoyed it.

great game play, story isn't great and the game starts to fall apart a bit during the end but overall it is a fun experience

The game was short, but it was definitely fun. The level design is basically asking to be skipped in all the ways possible. You never are held in a set path and can just jump off it (intentionally or not). Same goes for enemies. You can spend some time to beat them and get some extra points, or you can parry through their attacks while running at mach speed. The soundtrack is just as great as in the first game. I have some issues with the game: The story is pretty mediocre, the bosses are laughably easy (I played on normal), sometimes checkpoints respawn you facing the wrong direction, the UI should show buttons of the controller you are actually using and I believe some songs may have been reused from the previous title. To be honest, these flaws did not really impact my enjoyment of the game. I can definitely recommend Spark 2. It's a nice speed platformer with a lot of freedom in terms of movement. If only Sonic Forces was like this...
