Great story and an EXCEPTIONAL execution. Very lacking of actual gameplay as it's basically holding a stick in a direction sometimes and choosing dialogue tones, but it really doesn't matter if you love a narrative experience. - again the story is so well paced and told. I really cared and was emotionally invested in these characters - very cool animations and art style presented in a wholly cinematic way. So many of the time shifts from present to past and back again are a sight to behold. - top notch voice acting. Truly a class above. - the music and sound design are especially noteworthy. Really amplify the moments. Some segments genuinely give Reznor/Ross a run for their money If you just want to sit back and experience a great story I cannot recommend this enough.

The game plays out like a Film with time lapse of the present and past revealing parts of the story being told. You play as Peter, a shy/timid man who is a professor at Cambridge University. He is stuck in Antarctica trying to find rescue. as you try to find rescue you keep having flashbacks of Peter's life when he was at the university. Which led him to meet Clara. she's brave but also dismayed. The flashbacks story unfolds with Peter trying to write a paper for the university.(which isn't going well) Also the cold war is starting to kick off with protests of nuclear disarmament, possible threats from Russia. while at the same time discovering love. The gameplay is simple: you walk around and you click on objects to interact with this is also how you select the optional dialog. although you have optional dialog like offer games, These don't change the outcome of the story. But it doesn't take away from the feeling of being invested in the characters. And that comes down to the writing of the characters and the dialogue that goes on with them. There is a sense of realism and life in the different characters. which is really accomplished by the voice acting. The graphic design is very well blended with shapes, colors and shadows. The soundtrack is very much in tune with the mood of the story. all of this works very well together. to make a solid game. Now the biggest downside to this game is how the ending unfolds. Which I can't cover without containing spoilers.

If Only We'd Known: The Inescapable Script of Destiny "South of the Circle," set against the mid-Cold War era of 1958-1964, opens with a plane crash that foreshadows a fate already scripted. The game boasts a top-tier narrative, though its gameplay—limited to choices that ultimately don't alter the story—may divide opinion, resembling more a cinematic experience than a traditional game. To me, a game can be a vessel for storytelling, and in this light, "South of the Circle" shines brilliantly. The narrative unfolds through the protagonist's memories, which, like anyone's, are fallible and colored by personal values. The recurring interrogation scenes with the professor highlight this, as the protagonist repeatedly revisits his past, grappling with whether he stood up for Clara out of conviction or if it’s a reflection of his regret over betrayals. The player's choices seem inconsequential, underscoring the theme of individual helplessness against the sweep of historical currents. "South of the Circle" poignantly explores the inescapable societal forces that shape our inner shadows, silently steering our thoughts and actions. The predetermined ending, symbolizes the inescapable pull of the era, casting us onto the jagged rocks of tragedy and pain, revealing the subtle societal influences that quietly mold our identity and choices.

Certainly, the impact of the player's choices on the main story of this game may be subtle. However, the storytelling method itself might reflect the helplessness of individuals and the erosion of their humanity by the waves of the Cold War era. It could be a representation, even though it slightly diminishes gameplay, of how individuals are rendered powerless and swept along by the currents of that particular period in history. Perhaps these interpretations are simply aligning with my personal preferences and could be highly subjective, but I don't believe that such expressions and depictions are necessarily bad. 남극의 추위와, 어두운 냉전의 시대와, 그리고 지나간 과거와 마주하기.
