March 2025
This nice indie game is a fun one, and I definitely had some fun. The plot is fairly simple. The main character has to get his wife back, and pursues things, even after he died. The voice actors are great and did a good job bringing people to life. Combat is fun and easy, to master, and the system building bases, hiring mercenaries and kill the enmies. Side scrolling is quite nice nad not necessarily bad. Just that it is short enough that it still si quite fun. The pixel art is cute, and gets the point across with the character nad enemies. It is cool to see a ship go across and while y ou fight. It is also nice to see you can swipe and destroy a building. iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii I also, enjoyed the music while in the game, and think it is a plus. The developers drastically changed the game in September 2024, after reading some terrible negative reviews, which made things very different, and much better if you ask me. Before, it was rough and repetitive, and lack diversity that made it lack interest, and borderline monotonous. After the patch, I love it now. The levels are shorter, and bit more varied, so I think ti is good. Only bad thing is that, I paid $30 USD for it, and yet, the price lowered to $19.99 afterwards. I didnā€™t like it as much. Overall, Score 5/10 BEFORE the September 2024 update. Score 8/10 AFTER September 2024 update. With this score, I give a recommend only because of the September 2024 update. If not, I would give a sideways.

"accidentally clicked "restart level" on the menu and it immediately undid my entire progress on a level. not sure why there's not a "are you sure?" for quitting the game or restarting the level. crazy oversight that just made me waste two hours of my life, of a time I was actually quite proud of grinding out. all just gone, poof. cause I misclicked" - original review and it still stands. but having beat the game and played a bit of the Horde mode, the gameplay loop is addictive. can be repetitive, if you try to stick to one play-style, but there's a varied amount of units and ranged weapons to experiment with that make for a fun time (example: cover the ground in tar, then let your fire archers set ablaze all enemy battalion charges) very satisfying to learn and prevail, very fun. hope they make a sequel, or DLC. glad to turn my review around. the quality of life improvements they could make would save some headaches, but worth the price, especially if you like supporting indie devs!

I hate to base my opinion of one game on my experience with another, but the only reason I got this game is that it looks like it takes a lot of inspiration from the Kingdom series. The short way to describe this game to me would be - Kingdom, but a MOBA instead of a Tower Defence game. A one-dimentional MOBA is what Sons Of Valhalla feels like for the most part. You walk back and forth around in your camp, gather supplies, prepare your army and then attack and conquer the enemy bases one by one. The game also features a combat system that's inspired by the Dark Souls series with invincible rolls and a stamina bar that you have to keep an eye on. I was personally more interested in the tactical aspect of the game so the boss fights felt more like chore to me for the most part. Also, having the ability to fight through enemy hordes on my own with no warriors by my side weakened the joy of the game's tactical aspect. That's the game's main campaign mode. You travel between 5 different stages and go through a simple but effective "save the princess" story with beautifully drawn pixel art cutscenes and pretty good voice acting. The game has two other play modes: 1. A stealth game called "Raya's Escape" where you play as the princess trying to escape her prison, which I personally found to be very clunky to play as it doesn't feel great to use the game's default controls for accurate character movement. Also, the game froze every time I got captured and I had to restart at the tutorial so I lost my patience very fast. 2. A horde mode where you have one base and get waves of enemies coming at set intervals. The fact that you can't interact with your base at all while getting attacked makes this mode frustrating. And it leans heavily on the game's combat mechanics rather than it's tactical aspects. To sum up, Sons of Valhalla is a fun, short game that mixes tactics with action in a rather simple yet enjoyable package. It leaves a few things to be desired; Maybe multiplayer co-op or PvP; Maybe a better survival mode where you're getting attacked from both directions except for just the right side of the screen; but it's definitely a worthwhile experience.

This is one of those "I wish I could give it a neutral rating" games. I'm grudgingly giving it a thumbs up since I feel like I did get my money's worth out of it (I bought it on sale.) The graphics are really nice if you like pixel art. It's not even pretending not to steal Kingdom's presentation style, which is fine by me! The gameplay is different than Kingdom's in various ways, but also less interesting in various ways. Combat is the main activity, and upgrading buildings and training troops is secondary. Basically you go out, kill enemies, collect resources, upgrade your buildings and grow a small army, then attack and claim the next enemy position. It's not a terrible game loop and definitely works on paper, but it gets pretty grindy and repetitive. It's also missing the sense of exploration that Kingdom has, and the pacing is fairly flat - there are waves of enemies, but they're less distinct than in Kingdom and come in a relatively steady stream. They also aren't foreshadowed nearly as effectively in Sons of Valhalla - the setting sun doesn't mean much of anything, for example - in Kingdom you're constantly racing against the sun, trying to figure out how much you can get done before night because that's when you're going to get swarmed by enemies. There are a lot of collectible upgrades for the buildings and for your character, but most of them are just buffs to stats (for you or your troops) with the occasional new combat mechanic. Nothing terribly interesting, but it's somewhat fun trying to choose which upgrades to keep and which to discard. It also has boss fights with story beats as you move between regions on the map. The boss fights literally feel a little flat as well - I was wishing for some jumping gameplay during these. I did get hooked for a couple days, though. It's a linear game, and I got about halfway through before getting bored. I might finish it at some point, but I'm not in a big rush. If you're looking for something with a different take on the Kingdom formula and don't mind grinding, it's worth checking out, at least on sale.

Good little side-scroller with a bit of troop management. You push though different levels taking encampments held by variety of troops depending on the location using a hero and his army while building up a base as you go along. You also unlock abilities and runes which can help buff your style of play though there isn't a huge variety. Three aspects to the game: Hero - you attack enemies with sword, use consumables and special powers Army - You have a squad of troops to support your attacks on the enemies Management - You build a base, upgrade troops and collect runes which provide buffs to the hero, army and resource gains Now to address some of the complaints which appear to be a bit overblown. 1. Bugs - A lot of these have been resolved and feedback is being taken on board by the developers which resulted in buffing certain troops(like more damage on siege and improved behaviour for healers) and even moving a stealth mission out of the main campaign. 2. Depth - Some people seem to be expecting a game with the complexity of Starcraft 2 on a side-scrolling video game you will be disappointed. The commands are attack, defend and follow me; don't expect the option to encircle in a 2D game, You are a hero first, army leader second. 3. Grind - I don't think I waited longer than a minute for resources, you even unlock point where you can trade resources. You push with the army you have, fight a bit(you get silver from killing enemies) and than pull back to spend the resources when you have them. You don't have to turtle in the first base waiting for resources to get every upgrade. 4. Length - Took me about 6 hours on normal difficulty, an opinion on this if this is too short for you money is subjective, for example I think Assassins Creed Origins was 95% filler while another mate loved every second. Overall I get the impression people imagined this to be a game where your 80% army leader and 20% fighting as a hero when its more the other way around. I was similarly disappointed too but, I didn't let it stop me from enjoying the game. Feedback to the devs would be lean into the leading an army aspect if you make a future game and maybe a unit encyclopedia.
