Sega out of complete nowhere eclipsed the entire franchise in terms of level design, storytelling, animation, atmosphere, and controls in shadow generations. Crazy stuff. And to be clear, I'm a huge sonic defender, I insist nearly every game in this series is at least good if not excellent. That said I'm still shook at how good this was. I've platinumed this on PS5 and PS4, will buy it physically on the switch, and digitally for a 3rd time on xbox. If you've ever been interested in Sonic at all now's the time to jump in.

Shadows gameplay is actually really damn fun and some of the best Sonic has had, and Sega's willingness to repeatedly acknowledge some of their worst games (Sonic the Hedgehog 2006/Shadow the Hedgehog 2005) and basically improve on them is so audacious that I go back around to respecting it. I really hope this isn't a one and done formula and they can keep this up for the next game(s), cause they cooked so much here that it smells like a goddamn bakery. All hail Shadow.

While the Generations remaster is nothing special (weird decisions to change some cutscene animations and a rewritten script with a half baked dropdash and chao rescue missons added), the Shadow Generations is peak sonic gameplay. I hope this is the core gameplay going forward. For the love of god sonic team, don't pull a sonic lost world or sonic forces next game, keep the physics and level design quality like this, you got something good here.
