Somerville is a British indie game that is very similar to LIMBO or INSIDE. People hate this comparison, but it can't be helped if the developer founded and worked on LIMBO and INSIDE in the past. The influence can be felt. But while the mentioned games are puzzle focused, Somerville prioritizes atmosphere over gameplay. Meaning less puzzles and they are easy. The game is beautiful. The visuals and atmosphere are stunning. It is truly a work of art. But that is all it is. The controls were annoying and slow. Nothing is explained, you get lost often. Basically rely on intuition. The story is vague and that is getting very annoying at this point! I get it, they are trying to cut costs by skipping voice acting, but come on, every game in this genre does this now!! LIMBO and INSIDE did it, OK no big deal. "Black the Fall", "Planet Alpha" and even the newest "Planet of Lana", all did it too! Figure out the story on your own, it gets tiring.. It is not some deep world we can explore greatly like an some Cloverfield ARG (Alternate Reality game), it is a pretentiously shallow way to hide a non-existent tiny and insignificant story! The ending was the worst too! They recycled multiple segments which we already did. Explained as some illusion/simulation", I say it is cheap. Then at the very end it throws a braindead puzzle at us and does not communicate properly to us what needs to be done. You will get one of the "bad" endings unless you paid attention to every single insignificant detail in the game (like how many times did the dog bark in level 6 out of 12? who tf cares!?) Absolutely no foresight on devs part. A total narrative failure. A short 5 hour long game, but no wonder I fell asleep hence 20 hrs on record. Pretentious narrative that is “up for interpretation", yeah fk right off. I am really on the fence about this game. But for the atmosphere's sake, I'd say is a 51/100.

I played a lot of similar walking puzzle games like Limbo, Inside and American Arcadia and mediocre ones. Experience and environment-wise this one is it. My first playthrough lasted 5h. I have seen puzzles and game events i had never seen before. Towards the ending i think my mouth was stuck open for an hour. Puzzle-wise it tends to be easy.

Great story, but sometime it's confusing what your possibilities are, where to go or what to do, because you can do only one "right" thing, no choices basically

INSANE art direction and sound design. Great story, heck of a ride. 10/10 from me. An alien invasion story somewhere along the lines of War of the Worlds + Arrival + Close Encounters of the Third Kind + a tiny touch of Interstellar + a tiny TINY touch of Color Out of Space (the vibe, mainly - there is no body horror). I'm placing an emphasis on Arrival due to the theme of communication and its ability to completely change the future of everyone on Earth. You can try to learn the alien language in Somerville, or not. There are 5 possible endings to the game and while you can just stumble into most of them, the ending you get ultimately depends on how much effort you've put into learning to communicate. This is a side-scrolling game with light puzzles and no dialogue, similar to Playdead's games (Limbo, Inside), but technically far less polished. It's got that low budget jank, but this didn't hamper my enjoyment. I felt that the gameplay and controls were pretty intuitive, but it might not be to everyone's standards.

Limbo and Inside, to me, are masterpieces...I usually playthrough Inside at least once a year. One of those games that just felt like it was made for me...and then I noticed the development team had split up and there are now two companies making similar games...which is both sad and good...in a way. Somerville feels like the next logical step for these games to evolve into. Instead of Little Nightmares approach of copying and pasting Somerville actually brings back the special feeling these games offered when they were first released to the masses. The pacing is perfect, the story telling without speech or text is intelligently done as are the puzzle moments. Sound is still amazing and sounds like they are using the same guy who made the sounds for Inside. It is hungry on performance so don't be surprised if you have to run it on Medium or Low settings to get 60fps. I won't spoil by talking about anything else as it is another game that should be experienced. I will just say that it really took me back to the Another World/Flashback days of old. It's so cool...and it had me nearly crying several times! And I understand the criticism that this game received as it's not your usual game. If we split gamers into two groups...let's say "The Do'ers" and "The Dreamers"....then this game would appeal more to "The Dreamers." You will need to think, reflect and contemplate what the game is telling you. Intuition and going with what feels right is how you will succeed. It won't be obvious at first but experiment...and try not to overthink... Warning: There is minor jank due to the ambition of the gameplay and camera. Just reload the checkpoint if you get stuck or are unsure. I got stuck on the environment once.
