I've had my eyes on this game for a while now and finally bought it. It has a lot of potential but also some glaring issues with figuring out how to do certain things. Overall I give this a 6/10. Worth it but I really hope they make it a little easier to figure out. Granted at the time of writing this the game is in very early access so it's not surprising it has issues. What I Liked [*]The music is amazingly good [*]The sheer scale of the game is enormous. You can build on multiple planets and moons, it's massive [*]Tutorial windows cover the essentials What I Didn't Like [*]I couldn't figure out how to put equipment in a room when I built the first room. I got the airlock and walls up and stairs on the outside, but when I select the room and click on the very tiny Equipment button on the right, it shows me nothing can be built. I got a little frustrated here at first because it took me forever to find the Equipment button because it was very tiny and out of the way compared to the Construction commands, and then when you find it you can't build anything. [*]Camera controls with your mouse feel really janky when you are on a planet. It zips around really fast compared to in space and you can't go up/down very much when on the planet view. [*]Tutorials are 100% text based and could be done better. They rely on you seeing exactly what they are talking about without highlighting anything or making things stand out so you need to be very focused to figure some things out...like it taking me 10 minutes to find the Equipment button. [*]After playing for a bit and getting stuck on how to do things I had to bail on the game and go hunting through youtube for videos of how people have been doing things just to progress. Kinda frustrating, would be ideal if the game makes it easier to understand how to do certain things. What I Neutral About [*]Graphics are good but not fantastic. I was expecting them to be much worse to be honest, so to me they are good. [*]While the graphics and music were pretty good, the UI feels very basic and could use alot of work

This game has quickly become my favorite space colony builder and simulator. There's definitely a learning curve—it took me a few days to get the hang of it—but once I did, everything started to click. I’m still learning and haven’t progressed too far, but I’m loving it so far. Managing the logistics of producing essential resources like fuel, food, and water, and keeping your colonies well-supplied, all while balancing fuel costs and other factors, is incredibly satisfying. I’m excited to see where this game goes in the future, whether that means visiting other star systems or exploring the galaxy with advanced, researchable technologies. As for bugs, there are a few, and the UI and camera movement take some getting used to, but overall, they don't detract from the gameplay experience in my opinion.

one of the most intensive n hard colony sims ever, so its a clear ten, theres a lil mod to add rest of solar system minus a few moons on the gas giants, u might need to copy it out the steam workshop folder n edit the description so u dnt get the out of date message, but most of them work, the learning curve is steep but becasue of that its engaging casue the drive to get to a point of making money is so difficult its more rewarding when u get there, i still aint got there fully, im making this at 64 hours and im bout to start over with the new knowlage ive learned from last try xD, 10/10 i will take the solar system if it kills me xD, reserch and multiple small bases is my tip i think ;)

TL;DR Very mixed / limited recommendation - the game is amazing in some parts, but the biggest problem is the UI which is impressively bad. You can have fun with this game if you really want to play it now, and i don't know any other game that compares at all to Solargene, but it may be better to wait for it to improve first. My first impression was being completely blown away. I expected a cool looking, but in the end disappointingly shallow colony sim. My bar for physical accuracy and depth in scifi games is pretty dang high to be fair, which is why most games can't meet what i want - but surprisingly, i was not disappointed here. You have mining with resources depending on the planetary body and densities varying depending on where exactly you build a base, complex crafting chains, needing to tend to colonists' needs, interplanetary logistics - it's kind of everything i wanted. More than i hoped for. If you like me look at the screenshots and immediately start salivating - yes, that's exactly what the game is. With that said, it's certainly not perfect. The UI is pretty atrocious in particular, having the information you want on display is a fight and really you can't have much information available at a glance no matter what you do. I'm pretty sure you simply cannot manually rearrange windows, so all you can do is choose to minimize some but not others. It doesn't take a lot of open windows before some important info like your stored materials (arguably one of the most important info for an outpost) is completely invisible, because it's reduced to a tiny window with a scroll bar. Literally the info you need most gets treated as if it's one of the least important ones. Yikes! Be prepared to have to manage windows and/or scroll literally every time you need to check if you have resources for something. And it's generally just very difficult figuring out where you can build what, how you make certain materials, how fast your research speed is going to be etc. You'll have to just figure these things out, the first few hours are not fun because of this. A lot of the time, you literally cannot even see the name of an object! Once again, it's impressively bad. It's also otherwise not problem free, research sometimes just stops for no reason. Exiting the research screen for some reason freezes the game for a few seconds. Nothing too major so far, and any issues like this that i encountered honestly are barely worth mentioning given the UI elephant in the habitat. I'm also not too far into the game to be fair, still just working on a lunar outpost. But i think i've seen enough to know where things are heading. The one good news is that the dev is aware of the UI being atrocious, and a redesign is planned for the future. Generally it looks like the game is in fact being actively worked on and the dev cares, which is good to see - this looks like a genuine good use of Early Access from what i can tell. Still, this review talks about what the game is right now, not what it might one day be. And with that, i can only really recommend it for hardcore scifi fans that are willing to deal with a really bad UI. There is a diamond in the rough here, but it's one of the roughest diamonds you'll ever see. And even if you are in the target audience and very excited for this game, like me, you may be better off waiting for said update and hopefully you'll be able to have a much more pleasant experience. And to the dev - keep it up! I really really *really* want to see this game get more user friendly and otherwise to a place where i can wholeheartedly recommend it, because what i can see of this game now it absolutely has potential to be by far the best game in its niche, and i'm very excited.

Edit: Changed my review to positive because I'm hopeful there is a great game here given enough support and development. If you are prepared to push through the obfuscated UI and through trial and error find out what works and what doesn't, there is already a deep game here. Game looks nice and promising at first but quickly falls apart after a few hours of gameplay. By then it's too late for the Steam refund. The game is very opaque about what information it gives you on what things produce, inputs and consumption rates. Often you are just guessing at how much equipment to add to fulfil a need (to make an alert disappear on your display). This makes it hard to tell what is a bug or what is just a piece of missing information. And there are bugs (and crashes). I pushed on for a few hours but just got too frustrated. In the end, I was trying to build a spaceship with a certain delta-V but that delta-V info was not showing anywhere on the screen. I wasn't sure if this was because I hadn't put a piece of missing equipment on my ship or it was hiding on another screen. Had to go you Youtube to find out, no it was meant to be displayed as a Status screen with the ship. To fix I had to go out to the Solar System view and back to Ship view and now I could see Delta V again. So this was a bug. Why is my Delta-V zero? The game says to add more engines and fuel. So I try adding, 1, 2, 3 chemical engines and fuel tanks. Still my Delta-V is zero. Am I missing a different piece of equipment or some hidden setting? Or is it a bug? Hard to tell with this game. This game needs a lot attention to exposing the logistics and mechanics to the player.
