When Sniper Elite first hit the scene in 2005, it was a breath of fresh air for stealth shooters, introducing players to a slower, more methodical kind of World War II combat focused on precision and patience. Developed by Rebellion Developments, this game laid the groundwork for a franchise that would grow into a beloved blend of tactical sniping and immersive stealth. Set in the waning days of World War II, Sniper Elite puts you in the shoes of Karl Fairburne, a skilled American OSS sniper on a mission to sabotage Nazi efforts in Berlin. The story is straightforward, but atmospheric, relying on the gritty backdrop of the war-torn city and occasional voice-over intel briefings rather than cinematic drama. It’s enough to keep you invested without overshadowing the gameplay. What really defines Sniper Elite is its emphasis on stealth and patience. The game encourages careful planning: scouting enemy patrols, watching their movement patterns, and choosing the perfect vantage point before taking the shot. Shooting mechanics are satisfyingly realistic for the time, with bullet drop, wind, and breathing all influencing your aim. The iconic X-ray kill cam—which dramatically shows the bullet’s path through bones and organs—is already present here, adding visceral feedback that rewards well-placed shots and became a signature of the series. Levels are designed with multiple routes and sniper nests, encouraging creative approaches rather than run-and-gun. However, the AI can sometimes feel a bit predictable and unforgiving when spotted, forcing reloads or cautious restarts. The graphics were decent for 2005 standards—realistic environments filled with WWII-era buildings, vehicles, and soldiers. While not a visual powerhouse, the game nails atmosphere, with weather effects and distant gunfire adding to the tension. Sound design is a highlight, with authentic weapon noises, footsteps, and enemy chatter that help you gauge distance and enemy alertness. The sniper rifle’s crack and the bullet’s whistle as it flies past are particularly satisfying. Sniper Elite isn’t a long game, but it’s designed for replayability. Missions encourage you to complete objectives silently and efficiently, with bonus points for headshots and stealth takedowns. You can also experiment with different sniping spots and tactics. Difficulty ramps up noticeably, with more enemies and tighter patrols on higher settings, making stealth mastery essential. Though simple by today’s standards, Sniper Elite introduced a refreshing tactical focus on sniper gameplay that stood out amid the chaos of other shooters. It’s not a perfect game—AI can be rough, and some mechanics feel dated—but it’s an essential experience for fans of methodical stealth and sniping action. Pros: -Engaging stealth and sniping mechanics -Iconic X-ray kill cam adds satisfying feedback -Atmospheric WWII Berlin setting -Encourages patient, tactical play -Good sound design and weapon feel Cons: -AI can be inconsistent and punishing -Graphics and animations feel dated -Limited mission variety -Story is minimal and straightforward Sniper Elite is the quiet origin story of a franchise that turned precision shooting into an art form. For anyone curious about the roots of tactical sniping games, it’s a solid, if slightly rough, classic worth revisiting. Rating: 7/10

I don't know how to put it, but this game, despite its age, remains the most atmospheric of this series of games: all these explosions, shots, screams, even the noise of the surroundings makes it clear that this is not some kind of shooter, like Call Of Duty - this is a simulator of an ordinary soldier, where you can rely only on yourself. Unlike other parts, this one conveys the experience of a sniper best of all. No enemy marks. You yourself must determine the distance to the target and make an accurate shot. No minimap. You don't even know what awaits you behind the nearest break. Complete realism. Absolute Cinema.

The first Sniper Elite game I ever played was Sniper Elite V2, so I didn't have high expectations delving into the original. However, the game surprised me. This game holds up unbelievably well in most aspects including graphics, sound and map design, and of course, gunplay. The high quality textures astonished me and I honestly can't believe this game is from 2005. It's immediately noticeable that this game will absolutely not hold your hand. It's much more hardcore compared to its sequels and it sort of reminds me of the early Hitman games. The missions are fun and diverse and have you doing different things every time, so it doesn't feel repetitive by the end. The movement is a bit off, the enemy AI a bit too crazy and notices you too easily and you need to mess with config files and patches to get it to run right, but considering the game's age, one shouldn't be too surprised. I recommend this classic.

Though its dated, Sniper Elite holds up as one of the few to bring a touch of patience back. The game expertly blends stealth, tactical gameplay and marksman shooting to make an all-around engrossing experience that even holds up today. Players are drawn into authentic World War II combat scenarios that utilize realistic ballistics and historic environments, enabling squads to affect the battlefield. 100% took me about 25 hrs
