If you enjoy slasher films, and puzzles get this game. Whilst I am more of a slasher fan and much less of a puzzle fan I still really enjoyed this. Packed full of references and accompanied by a huge array of content Slayaway Camp is a very fun game, and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to kill a few hours whilst pointing like the Leonardo DiCaprio meme (you know the one) when they see a reference to a film they've more then likely watched.

This is one of those games where you can experience the incredibly satisfying feeling of everything clicking before finally solving the puzzle you've been staring at for the past half hour. Huge recommend if you're a puzzle lover and a slasher movie nut.

Prior to its removal from the Steam store due to licensing issues with the IP, one of the most satisfying free-to-play games on this platform was BlueWizard's original slide puzzle slasher, "Friday 13th: Killer Puzzle". The fact that this interesting and nostalgic budget brain teaser drew to a close before many of us had gained all the achievements was a true travesty of the modern gaming landscape; and one that easily rivalled the plight of those online gamers mourning the loss of the other, bigger "Friday 13th" digital counterpart. Thankfully, the good people at BlueWizard had plans for their now scuppered splatter-fest and created their own delightfully deranged (if highly derivative) slasher puzzle title in the form of "SlayAway Camp". Swapping out Jason for Skullface - A deranged grounds keeper with a face only mother could love - your mission is much the same in the previous title. To wrap your brains around a complex selection of slide puzzles and wrap the guts of hapless quarries around your blade(s). In fact, the two games play so similarly to one another that they could easily be interchangeable. This newer title has a few extra skins, a new art-style that is closer to "Minecraft" than "South Park", and a tonne of unlockable freebies to enjoy spending those hard-earned skull coins on. The drawbacks to the game, as one would expect, are exactly the same as those apparent in "...Killer Puzzle". That is to say, you will either love it to the point of addiction or you will absolutely loathe it. This is due in no small part to the game's steep learning curve. The latter stages of each 'movie' can prove extremely taxing in their complexity and those with short attention spans may quickly find themselves swearing at the screen in frustration. As before, the game does allow players to access both tips and solutions for each puzzle should they become stumped. However, when these facilities are utilised, one can't help but feel that the win is ill-deserved. Beyond that, there isn't much more to the game. As with BlueWizard's previous title, "SlayAway Camp" suffers the malady of all entries to the puzzle genre: lack of variety. That is to say, outside of the aesthetics and goodies to collect, it's a one-and-done set of puzzles which once completed a few times risk losing their sense of vigour. Guess that's just something players just have to live with. ...and then there's the little matter of the absurd level of gore. Granted, the game does offer parental style controls throughout to try and keep things PG, but the fact remains that this is a slasher. Ergo, despite being recently challenged by Team 17's awesome "Killer Frequency" it's generally accepted that the red stuff is a prerequisite. I'm no moral guardian but this is something that should be addressed before little Jimmy loads this up. Regardless, as both a Horror and puzzle game fan, I simply can't get enough of "SlayAway Camp". It stands as a tribute both to it's predecessor game and to the movies that inspired them. It's not original, but then it doesn't try to be. Big, brash self-indulgent fan at it's finest. - 4/5 stars.
