i've been really disillusioned with romance and love for a long time. i don't think i've ever confessed to anyone and been successful. I tried a lot growing up but it's never gone well. eventually i gave up. the one relationship i have been in was disastrous for my mental health. sure the mistakes i've made and the wounds we inflicted on each other made me a better and wiser person today, but it also closed me off from thinking that i could ever have a meaningful relationship with anyone. over a long time i saw that others also experienced difficulty. it was rare for anyone to find someone they can be happy with. a lot of the time its a relationship of lust, which is fine if that's all you're looking for, but that's not what i want. i know that what most people want nowadays isn't something you'd find in me. i'm not adventurous, im closed off, i often unintentionally bring down the mood. i'm unapproachable sometimes even to people that know me well. this doesn't mean i dislike myself, i think i've come to accept myself as i am. i honestly thought for a long time that i might be ok if i was on my own for the rest of my life. it might be better than finding hope and getting burned and going back to square one. nothing really convinced me otherwise. around the same time i started playing, my philosophy class started talking about the meaning of existence and living. we read the myth of sisyphus by albert camus. he said that at some point people recognize an absurdity in existence between us expecting things to have a meaning and there inherently not being one in the world. even the pursuit of knowledge is broken down into theory the further you go down. there is no solid foundation. we simply are, and some people (like me) feel empty because of that. they tire of the daily cycle and they want out. camus says there are only three ways out. taking a leap of faith (religion) and trusting in something you can't really identify the truth of, accepting the absurdity of our situation, and suicide. at that point i was contemplating the third. to accept the absurdity you need to recognize that whatever is meaningful to you is dependent on you and you alone. you have to apply meaning to living if you want living to have meaning. i was struggling to do so. i honestly thought i conquered my suicidal thoughts a long time ago. i thought i had accepted the absurdity and resolved to go on, but i was really just denying that something felt wrong. camus said sisyphus was the champion of absurdism. he who cheated death once, died, and came back just to experience the world again before being taken away for good. he said to imagine sisyphus happy in between each of his attempts during the brief reprieve where the boulder rolls down and he can appreciate the view, but this wasn't satisfying to me. in fact it made it worse. it only made me aware that my bones ached from the weight of the boulder and that the view at the top was growing old and dull. i think slay the princess made me want to love someone again. there were moments that were so incredibly sweet and tender that i couldn't help but want to experience something like that for myself. i realized that even if i probably would be ok alone, i didnt want to be. i want to be able to push the boulder with someone and enjoy the walk down in their company. i want to share my struggles and my joy with someone else. the thought that it might never happen terrifies me. people tell me to just have faith that things will work out but i'm incapable of that. there's not much i can do except hope though. to whoever is reading this, you may not have a similar reaction. there is a slim chance that we have similar outlooks and experiences. whatever meaning you discern from this game is unique to you. just know that this game changed me. whether it was in a good way or bad way is yet to be seen, but all good stories have the ability to touch and change people. i think this one deserves a chance to change you. and im sorry this review is so long and sappy, this game means just means a lot to me.

Take a sniff of The Stanley Parable, a hint of Doki Doki Literature Club, and stir it in a Lovecraft pot. Beautifully horrific, doing things with the visual novel engine that I have never seen before, and a really good story.

Slay the Princess is one of those games where it’s best if you go in blind, so what I can tell you without spoiling the game is limited. I can tell you a few things I wish I knew before I started playing. 1. Though Slay the Princess is classified as a horror game, that’s not the point of the game; it’s not constantly trying to jump scare you, for instance (there are maybe two jump scares in the entire game). While there are several sequences that could potentially disturb some players, I consider myself somewhat of a wuss, and I was mostly fine throughout the game. Please don’t let the horror label scare you away from an interesting and unique story. 2. The text at the beginning of the game is not lying. “ There are no wrong decisions. There are only fresh perspectives. ” So don’t be afraid to experiment. (See: point 1). 3. While playing the game, you will eventually trigger a sequence that will lead you to think “Oh, I’ve beaten the game.” This is an understandable conclusion, as the sequence in question certainly does look pretty climatic and final. However, just because you’ve technically finished the game, does not mean that you’ve seen everything the game has to offer. I strongly encourage you to go through the game 2 or 3 times before “lowering your spoiler shields” as Slay the Princess’ story is deceptively dense. 4. Slay the Princess is fully voice acted, and the cast does an outstanding job. Jonathan Sims and Nichole Goodnight knock it out of the park with their performances. You will listen to a British man argue with himself, and you will be entertained the entire time. My recommendation for Slay the Princess cannot be overstated. This is an interesting and unique story that you won’t find anywhere else.

I liked the part where the writing accommodated every mindset I could employ for a story path, a concept that the Stanley Parable would shamelessly steal 12 years prior. 10/10 all time favorite
