Real sweetheart of a game; I felt a lot of heart went into this. Not too difficult once you know what you're doing, with a hard playthrough taking me around 12 hours. There's no grinding, so it's good for completionists who want every enemy gone by the end. I've played it a few times now, and it was definitely worth the money.

This game is extremely short and has little to no replay value. That said, it is also worth the money for a brief bit of entertainment, provided you don't mind those two points. The artistic character of the game is certainly lovely, and the world it is set in seemed interesting, but due to the brevity of the game, you don't get to see or learn as much as I would've liked.

Fun JRPG set in an interesting world and with a rather enjoyable plot. I am pretty terrible at turn based combat but I was able to clear the whole game without a single game over - health/mana items and spells are plentiful and there’s enough enemy encounters to ensure plenty of stats upgrades. You can also choose two class specializations at fixed points in the story, which adds a nice little bit of depth. Graphics are pretty but not amazing - character models in dialogue and battle are super cool.

It's a mild thumbs up. Its not great, but its not terrible either. I don't have all that much to say on this one. It has a few elements that are only touched upon that could have lead to a more interesting story and better character development, but sadly the writing falls short in that department. The music is fine, but nothing special. The gameplay is fun enough to compel the player forward. It does have a few difficulty spikes. I got to my first difficulty spike around the time that sidequests open up. Once I finished those sidequests, the rest of the game was mostly pretty easy, so I switched to hard difficulty and even then, only a few bosses gave me any pause at all. I found the controls weren't very good. My ps4 controller worked for the first half of the game and then randomly the dpad stopped working, though the left stick still worked. I'm not sure why that happened, but joy-to-key fixed that all up for me. The controls are kind of clunky because menu and cancel are the same button. I'm not a fan of that amount of condensed controls when there are only 2 buttons used other than the directional buttons. It has a turn order in battle that's nice to have and a few sidequests and items to find. There are even a few super bosses that prove a challenge and required a bit of strategy, but nothing that will take more than 2-3 attempts. This isn't anything all that special, but it's passable for a small game if you want something to play while you watch a show on another screen.

"Skyborn" strikes a chord with its enchanting charm, reminiscent of classic JRPGs, yet it stumbles in embracing modern gaming standards. This dichotomy forms the heart of my experience with the game. The Good: [*] Pixel Art Mastery: One cannot help but admire the beautiful pixel art in "Skyborn." The maps, characters, landscapes, and backgrounds are crafted with a level of detail and creativity that is both nostalgic and refreshing. This visual treat keeps the world engaging and a joy to explore. [*] Captivating Soundtrack: The game's soundtrack is a standout feature. It's not just background music; it's an integral part of the experience, enhancing the mood and emotion of every scene. The compositions range from soothing melodies to more upbeat tracks, all of which fit the game's aesthetic perfectly. [*] Engaging Characters: The characters in "Skyborn" are its soul. They are well-written and likeable, each with their own unique backstories and personalities. This strong character development makes the player's journey through the game more personal and immersive. [*] Classic JRPG Battle System: The battle system is a throwback to the golden era of JRPGs. It's straightforward yet engaging, making it easy for newcomers to grasp while still offering enough depth for genre veterans. The Bad: [*] Outdated Engine Limitations: "Skyborn" runs on the older RPG Maker VX Ace engine, which shows its age in not supporting widescreen resolutions. This oversight is significant in an era where widescreen is the norm. Though I managed to adjust the scaling features of my graphics card to mitigate this issue, it's not something every player will know how to do. The lack of developer guidance on this front is a notable drawback. [*] Lack of Controller Support: The absence of controller support in a JRPG is baffling. Playing with a mouse and keyboard feels counterintuitive for a game in this genre, where the controller has always been the preferred input method. This oversight could alienate a portion of the game's potential audience. Conclusion: "Skyborn" is a love letter to classic JRPGs with its enchanting pixel art and engaging characters. However, its adherence to an outdated engine and lack of modern features like widescreen support and controller compatibility are notable drawbacks. It's a game that will resonate with fans of the genre who can overlook these technical limitations, but it may struggle to appeal to a broader audience seeking a more contemporary experience.
