An amazing space RTS that allows anyone to pick it up and play. You don't need to be the Star Craft 2 sweatlord to be good at this game. Its fun just playing it. The best part isn't even the base game but the mods. You can play Halo, Mass Effect, Star Wars etc in a fully realized setting that feels like it's part of the normal game. Don't play for the story as its all told through intro movies, background unit conversations and what you can dig up online. still doesn't matter because the game play is what carries this game. 10/10

This version of the game is the original SOASE game with add-ons (like Titan-class ships). It seems to be re-balanced so that newbies don't get wiped out, as they did in the final patches of the original game years ago. Even on the lowest difficulty levels, that last patch made the game unplayable. This version rolls that back, as long as you're not trying to attack everyone at once and you make good use of pirate raids. I finished a game a few days ago, maxing out all the tech trees, maxing my fleet, wiping the pirate home world, and wiping out all my rivals. Note: wiping out a capital, for some reason, wipes out your enemy with the default options. In the end of that game, there were 4 or 5 planets left of one of my rivals, but I left them for last since they weren't attacking me directly. When I wiped out my other remaining rival, the game ended with me winning, even with those planets still in enemy control. This is a very complicated game at first. Play all of the tutorials. Pause the game right at the beginning, and read over the tech tree - ALL OF IT. Understand that some buildings, like trade ports and media hubs, are gated by the number of labs you've built, and as such, building trade and media advancements is not available immediately, and is not nearly as important as weapons, shields, armor and fleet logistics (you can't build what you can't support). At the same time, don't max fleet logistics in the beginning, because of increasing recurrent fleet support costs dragging down your income - take some planets, build up their incomes, take as many planets as you can before you can't win battles, THEN raise fleet logistics and defend what you have until you've built enough ships to take more planets. One important point: pirates will destroy some of your planets over time. This should be expected, and you should have a colony ship ready to rebuild such planets the second the pirates clear out of the system (pirates do not colonize planets). Pirate attacks can keep your enemies at bay, but as the bounty goes higher, they will not only attack your enemies, but you too. Yes, you will scream at this when it happens, but get used to it. It's better to spend that money, tie up the enemy, and rebuild a planet than it is to get wiped by your enemies (who will pay the pirates to go after you, too). Just remember that by the endgame, you will be able to wipe out the pirate home world completely at a time of your choosing, then any remaining pirate swarms. In the meantime, the pirate swarms are so big that all but the largest fleets will not be able to take out a swarm without losing many ships, and that's during the entire game. And that's just one swarm - the next cycle's swarm will be bigger...and bigger. The best way to survive is to get out of the pirates' way, and pound your real enemies who can take your planets, colonize them and use them against you. The bigger the galaxy, the longer the game will take. Small and medium, you can probably finish in a day. Large and higher will take multiple days to play through and win. If you are running this in 4K, be sure to get in the MAIN MENU settings (i.e., not within a game you're playing) and set the interface scaling to at least 200%, otherwise you will probably be unable to read any of the text. Thanks to Fyst for showing me (and now you) how to do that. Main Menu --> Options --> User Interface -->Scaling (bottom right) --> set to 200% (or to taste). TL;DR: It's not Master of Orion 2, but it's a good strategic and tactical game. If it gets overwhelming, hit the Pause key, and look everything over. Take your time at first, because there's a learning curve. Most of all, when you start a new game, your opponents each have a difficulty setting, and IT IS NOT AT THE EASIEST LEVEL. Click through all the difficulties until you get the one-chevron Easiest level for each enemy, otherwise you may get stomped. Use the pirates, but don't go toe-to-toe with them. Up your planet colonization and fleet techs, take planets until you can't, then upgrade fleet capacity. Wash, rinse, repeat. Save cultural and trade techs for near the end, because your fleets are your life's blood. Good luck.

Probably reiterating what has already been said a thousand times, but if you've been watching this game and felt put off by its apparent complexity, don't be. If you can play something like Age of Empires, you can totally play Sins of a Solar Empire

Rock solid 4x space RTS. The base game is fun and addicting enough, but the real show stopper is the incredible mod support. This game has, quite literally, some of the best mods available to it with an almost fanatical community.
