I've found this game by accident, tried the demo and bought it. Good chance and good decision. Basically, it uses a tried and tested Heroes III chassis to build upon, ending up (or rather - WILL end up) with something considerably better than everything else that tried to simulate, emulate or downright copy-paste the classic over the years. Even though the game is similar to HoMM in many ways, it's not a clone, it has its own ideas - and they are good ideas too! Even though it's still not finished in terms of content, it's very much playable and enjoyable. Why it's not simply a HoMM copy? First of all - it has its own setting, which manages to be both subtly hilarious and well-thought out. That's no sci-fi, it's more like futuristic fantasy (which by the way the HoMM universe also is, although under cover, but let's not get into that now) with dictatorial militaristic moles, zealous cyber-bugs, over-the-top 80's style humans from the future and so on. The dialogue in the campaign is fun to read. Aesthetically, the creatures are interesting to look at, the animations are nice and the map, although cartoonish in general, is quite readable after you get used to it. The balance seems to be all over the place right now, but that's to be expected. Certain creature abilities are quite original. I love the "artillery" type of units. The "spells"... I can't quite figure out how effective they are yet - some of them seem to do quite a good job, others - not so much. As for the heroes - there's a good range of abilities to choose from and so far they all make some sense, but it looks like each hero is just a portrait and a short background - no specialization (at least I couldn't find any) that would make him/her/it unique gameplay-wise. Maybe this is something, which will be implemented later (hopefully). If you're a potential buyer - at the moment the game has one campaign, some pre-made maps outside of it, 3 playable factions (a fourth one is expected soon, from what I read) and seemingly all, or at least most of its core mechanics in place. From what I've seen, it can easily keep you entertained for at least 40-50 hours with that content alone and that number will raise drastically when other campaigns, factions and so on appear. It's worth it. in short. One suggestion to the devs (apart from the hero specialization mentioned above) - the concept of building support structures on the map is a nice one, but could use some more flavour. The sentry guns for example can't stop anything but the weakest enemy army - why not add an option to upgrade them? Same with the other types of buildings. Also - it will be nice to have the option to build roads. All in all, I'm fairly optimistic that the fully baked game will be a worthy Heroes successor, likely surpassing the upcoming new Heroes game from Ubisoft.

Incredible gem right here. Universe of full of war but it is so goofy and charming at the same time. The story has no right to be written so well. The tropes of heroes of might and magic are here in full but it brings something new in each of the categories that make HoMM good. Building up your army is extremely addictive as it should be. The “one more turn” syndrome is in full effect. The factions are very open to multiple strategies and no faction is dominant in one way. Easy recommendation.

Very nice science fiction version of Heroes Of Might and Magic Unfortunately I encountered a game breaking bug. But after reporting this, the makers emailed me back and are trying to solve it. They seem very responsive. EDIT: Together with a developer we solved the game breaking bug, and he emailed me a working save so I could continue.

I have only played a few skirmishes but as a massive Heroes of Might and Magic fan this is something I have been waiting for for a looong time. The art and music are absolutely wonderful. The factions are varied and interesting. From a gameplay standpoint this stays very close to HoMM but makes some smart refinements: - instead of a week you have different portions of the day. This is a great concept and allows for differing environmental art and mechanics - you can invest in mines to increase their production or create garrisons for defending forces - you can build mini structures in key locations (think caravan nodes / garrisons / watchtowers) - skills feel more balanced compared to HoMM - eg instead of the worthless eagle eye there is a similar skill that also teaches you a new spell every day (week) - instead of immediately using things on the battlefield you can collect them (eg think being able to pickup and deliver treasure chests) - number and power of the hero artifacts you can equip are limited by your hero's mana pool size They only downsides I've spotted so far: - the AI doesn't feel very challenging, it feels on par with HoMM2.. though I haven't explored too many maps or difficulties yet so we'll see. - while the art and sound are gorgeous the animations feel a little interpolated. If I were comparing this to any other game this minor nitpick wouldn't even register but comparing to HoMM2 and 3's phenomenal hand-animations mean that I have to point it out It's still early in development, but I think what is here is already very fun and promising - watch out for that "one more turn"

When I first played this game, it was during the closed beta about a year ago. I expected another disappointment along the lines of Songs of Conquest or the other half dozen homm likes and clones over the years, but then I suddenly realized I had clocked in over 30 hours--and I still wasn't bored. This is the first game I've played that hits like homm does. It doesn't try to be a "spiritual successor" by attempting to reinvent the wheel, and instead builds upon what we all know already works and appropriately adds some new ingredients while tweaking others. The combat sprite animations might exude flash game energy and take a little to get used to, but the rest is all there and pretty solid. And I mean, cmon, watch the preview video up top. You see that fuckin' art? You hear that fuckin' music? Game slaps. After playing EA for a couple hours, and checking over the list of feedback I gave a year ago, a solid percentage of them have been addressed/implemented. I don't really have any major gripes or concerns. Certain mechanics need expanding on to fully justify their presence, and then some UI polish here, some balance refining there. I'm eager to see the boys at Oxymoron Games complete their vision, and I hope they get the attention they deserve.
