It's an old game, but one I can't get enough of. I play it both on Intel Windows boxes and on M1 Macs without issue.

Baseline - I keep coming to back to this game periodically. I haven't quite beaten all levels/scenarios (although some I can do consistently), so there's still some challenge in it for me. What I like: variety of geographic & temporal scenarios. Different hardness factors (# of AI competitors, starting capital), What I dislike: the big one - the train routing is a little buggy and trains can get themselves stuck; however, a little extra track building keeps trains moving. Small stuff: Putting railroad barons in places and times they weren't; no trains past the 90's

Such a fun game. Wish they had built out more maps, game modes, etc. but as a base game, it is complete and endless enjoyment. Very simple LAN setup—easy to play with a couple friends!

Notes to Self: The game has a bit of a "snowballing" issue. And not enough maps. "+" and "-" raise / lower the track on laying. Shorter distances are generally a lot more profitable, even compared to higher prized goods. Feed a factory you own as much as you can and as fast as you can, best from two ressource nodes if possible, to make it grow big faster, because then the percentage of the profit goes up (20%, 35%, 50% of all delivered cargo). The game is best balanced at "Tycoon" (2nd hardest) difficulty level: and even then it is pretty much over after 70 years. - If you want to see the later trains, choose the later starting date. If you just want to have a bit of fun, consider playing at "Mogul" (one easier). At the highest difficulty level, the AI inevitably snowballs harder / faster than you, which isn't really fun. Anything easier than Mogul is just not worth playing: you will have won after a few decades, without seeing half the trains. EDIT: On Tycoon the AI isn't buying me out - which means letting me win on purpose... - that's a deal breaker. The predecessor games were a lot harder, with lots more interesting scenarios - I played them with all scenarios a long time ago; not sure wether you can even get them running, or wether you even want to see their age old graphics. - This Sid Meier's Railroads is good for a few hours every year, when you want to play something easy and for comfort.

Very Nostalgic Game for me, however I can't play the game without crashing now. I can't get anywhere without it crashing, saving very often is kinda annoying, but its not the games fault, just really old.
