got this on sale, totally new to the civ series. "well, I've got about 15 minutes before bed...that's enough time to check out the game mechanics before I have to sleep." (6 hours later, as dawn is beginning to break) "DAMMIT I WAS 2 TURNS AWAY FROM WINNING THE SPACE RACE!!!!!!!!!" this game is very fun, and probably very bad for my health. two thumbs up!

This is the last Civilization game before they took away the ability to stack units. I feel like it's the last of an era.

5 dropped the ball on so much in regards to complexity and diplomatic options, and 6 did even worse. Unfortunately 5 will always be my preferred option due to combat alone. Seriously, combat in 4 (BTS) is awful, and significantly holds the game back in my opinion. I come back every once in a while, but I never stay long. Recommend if you're looking for a cheap/ low spec entry to the franchise or prefer background complexity over proper turn based combat. This game blows the whole franchise out of the water until a war starts, which depending on your playstyle might not even be a large portion of the game. God combat fucking sucks though, whose idea was it to make air power useless at a certain strength % against ships? -Most people have their hours in BTS, disregard mine. I don't have a ton on for 4 anyways but it was the first I got not counting Revolution, so the rose tinted glasses hit hard. Also Take Two is a genuinely shitty company, and you'll have to agree to their privacy policy to get in. I don't hate valve, but you could probably just pirate a copy without all that jazz. Beyond that, I genuinely don't think Firaxis or 2k have earned your money anymore, seeing what they spent it on for 6. The game is practically live service at this point, and civilization 7 probably will be. If you're really committed to doing things the legal way I'd work through GoG and minimize the profit made off of you, they also have Alpha Centauri which is quite probably the best IP with Sids name on it. Even if you have plenty to spare, respect your dollar more; it's the only power you have in the digital marketplace. Blue thumb instead of red thumb because it's definitely a good game, and I generally agree with the arguments that the franchise started going downhill from here (5 is still my favorite, but that's after modding it to be more like 4). I just promise that unless you're one of the old spergs high off of Adderall and nostalgia you're going to hate combat and wish it were skippable. Good scenarios, dated modding scene but like morrowind there are die-hards still around keeping the ship afloat.
