This is one of the best games of all time. I have been playing it since I was in the 6th grade. I more then likely have well over 1,000 hours of real play time of this game over all the years. I used to come home and pick up my civ from where I left it. Before I knew it hours had gone by. I am now a grown man and I still play this game. IMHO it is far superior to the civ games that have come after it. They tended to make it easier to play and more orientated toward the casual or kid player. I will continue to play this game as long as I can run i have an OS that will run it.

Civilization 3 was and is, by far, the best Civ game ever. I do not understand how Sid Meier could deviate from the concepts, GUI, look-and-feel, etc., of this great game. Civ4 started to deviate by removing the 'defensive' stats of units, diplomacy seemed much more limited, and the graphical design was very bad with the 'giant units.' I won’t even mention Civ 5, which I played for maybe 30 seconds before immediately uninstalling: Civ 5 is an insult to the Civ lineage. Civ 6 I played for a few hours, but it just feels painful—it’s as if they deliberately threw away all the great ideas in Civ3. Combats, for example, which were always central to Civ, are now almost nonsensical to me. First, it is nonsensical and a pain to remove unit stacking. 'Ghost' garrisons that 'magically' exist in new cities are just nonsense. Unit movement points causing units to 'wait' until the next turn to move to hills or similar terrain is just a pain—all the excitement of combat in Civ 3 was removed. Diplomacy feels 'pre-defined' and dull compared to Civ3. And the interface is catastrophic compared to Civ3—the wonderful and very practical advisors's screen where you could see all your cities (and citizens' heads!) and all your units (per city or per unit), etc., are gone and replaced by useless and awkward elements. Wonders don’t feel like wonders. Shields are gone. We no longer have the 'feeling' of the process of building and accumulating shields. New 'features' like the 'civics tree,' districts, and other additions are merely minor and unnecessary complications that don't add any real value... I could go on for a while. I really beg Sid Meier to reconsider Civ3, which is objectively a wonder of the world. I am sick of people thinking that they need to change things just for the sake of change—even things that worked well! Keep the things that work. There are, however, many minor changes and improvements (e.g., new units, some details or 'bugs' in the diplomacy, etc.) that can be addressed. But 'change for change’s sake' is simply equivalent to stupidity and generally leads to very unsatisfactory outcomes. In the culinary world, you don't improve a recipe by randomly changing all the ingredients. Please, Sid Meier, if you read this: It’s time to revive and continue a 'true' Civilization lineage that fully embraces and builds upon the core principles that made Civ3 an unparalleled masterpiece. P.S. Please note that I have been playing Civ 3 since it was released around 2001-2002, and I still play it today. Before that, I played Civ 2, which was a fantastic game as well, though I must admit that Civ 2 now feels a bit "dated" to me. Civ 3, however, still doesn't feel like an old game, even here in 2024, which is solid proof of its enduring greatness.

I played Civ 2 for years until it would no longer run on the current version of Windows. Civ 3 is similar to Civ 2 but it will run on Windows 11. The game is complex, but not as complex as later version like Civ 4, which I found to be too complicated - Way too many decisions about type of government, diplomacy, etc. Civ 3 hits the sweet spot for me: Not too complicated but definitely challenging.

It's a BIT touchy, given how old the game is, and the layers of emulation that must be going on to make it run at all. That said, I still enjoy playing this version, some 20 years on. The newer games are absolutely cleaner, more board-game-like, but there's something satisfying about having a few HUNDRED units sloshing around the map, to me, and Civ3 still delivers.

Quick Notes • The best Civ of the entire series. Every Civ after has departed from this, which is a real shame. I would've loved to see some quality of life updates and a remaster. Still an easy recommendation. • The gamestudio mentioned wanting Civ to feel more like a board game. Civ 4 doesn't accomplish this, Civ 5 does so a little bit, Civ 6 absolutely does, but it's to its detriment. The uncomplicated nature of this PC game, that gets as hard as you like, makes it an absolute masterpiece. • Be prepared to play for hours on end, there's no such thing as a short game in Civ 3. You'll be saying: "One more turn" as the sun goes down, only to see the sun come up, feel tired all day, and do it again the next night.
