Overview: Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is essentially a table top, turn based, WW-I fighter game that's quite similar to old board games such as Avalon Hill's "Richthofen's War," GDW's "Blue Max," or Milton Bradley's "Dog Fight!." The game is designed for the casual user and can only be played in a campaign mode as the Brits, French, German or US - so there are no single or randomly generated battles, nor is there an editor. The player controls a small group of four aircraft. Pilots in this group build up experience points with each new air battle. The results of which manifests as new maneuvers such as rolls, loops, slips, wing-over, etc. The pilots also receive newer aircraft types as the war progresses but these are unlocked at certain time periods and have nothing to do with the player's skill progress. Each aircraft in the game has unique features based on five characteristics: Speed, Maneuver, Dive, Climb and Hit Points. Overall, the campaign lasts about thirty air-battles. Verdict: To be honest, I didn't expect much from this game when I purchased it. Ace Patrol appeared to be a glossy watered down version of those old previously mentioned aerial war games. However, I was quite surprised at how addictive the game can be and found many air-battles quite challenging. Like other Sid Meier games, emphasis is put on fun and play-ability, not realism. Still, I'd recommend this game to anyone interested in turn based games during this era of warfare.

< I recommend the game if under $8 > An older Turn based Strat game. It's repetitive, it will crash likely unless you run it in compatibility mode. It's a Sid, so you know what that design looks like but it is neat and original for a TBS. It will indeed get super repetitive but it is a nice little time sink and varied enough to not always be successful at the higher levels.
