Very unique puzzle game I can only describe as a crossover between Puyo and Dig Dug, wrapped up in a hub-based roguelike. Your character is physically present on the board, needing to navigate falling blocks that are mostly enemy units with unique characteristics. To destroy enemies, you must sacrifice your own HP to deplete theirs -- ideally in chains, which will damage all matching units at once. This requires you to tactically recover your HP by seeking out potions that are also falling alongside foes, regular blocks, and other elements. The goal in every level (except boss encounters) is to keep clearing the board and survive until the exit gate spawns, which takes a few minutes at most. And that's just the basic gist; you also gain unique abilities based on your character choice and the equipment you pick up. You'll also face different challenges depending on modifiers, the challenge portals you find, and the bosses you confront on your run. There's plenty of choices to discover and unlock as you keep playing. Suffice to say there's a learning curve, but keep with it and you'll be clearing boards like a pro in a few hours. Worth mentioning is a large suite of difficulty options to help cushion your runs and let you focus on learning; some will disable achievements, but most don't. I'd personally recommend giving yourself 5 stocks and slowing the idle speed down slightly to ease in, while still getting a decent challenge. I found Pocket Dungeon to be a tightly-designed, action-packed, and rewarding puzzle game. I saw a few reviews complaining that the difficulty is cheap and unfair, but frankly I don't think these players wholly understood the gameplay and settings options. Fully recommended.

Beatiful, addicting game. Don't knock it before you try it. Long time fan of the franchise, but held off on buying this game because it was very different from the previous entries. Decided to bite the bullet after all the games went on sale during the 10th-year anniversary. I didn't get it at first but when it clicked it became incredibly addicting. Grinding through those dozens of runs is a blast, and rarely ever feels like a chore as the assortment of different playable characters, modifiers, abilities, etc ensures that there is always something fresh in your run. On top of that, gorgeous pixel graphics, pushing a franchise with an already established art direction even further. TL:DR It's different, but you just might like it.

do you ever play a game and just think "this was made for me" I think this is my favorite puzzle game probably ever? an absolutely absurd amount of base game content, alternate single player modes, local (remote coop possible) vs mode, minigames and secrets as well. especially with the first two free DLCs having introduced what is essentially alternate versions of almost every character, more areas and relics, (and mod support!) with one final (still FREE) DLC pack still on the way. there's also tons of modular difficulty you can implement whether you want breezingly easy or wrist-wracking pain, both in options and in-game via the hat system.
