fate and fortune is the most uniquely cruel experience i have ever endured, and not merely within the confines of recreation. it is a trial-by-fire that is wholly apathetic to the notion of the indomitable human spirit and thus actively tries everything in its power to break it. i have previously regarded tooth extractions higher than this sysyphean toil. never before, or since, have i observed in a game the potential to evoke such raw, primeval indignation; like that of a trapped animal gnawing at its paw, desperate to persist in the woefully indifferent world which consigned its wretched fate in the first place. the dlc has made full completion tantamount to rubbing pepper flakes into your retinas while a scooter perpetually strikes your ankle at terminal velocity. subjecting oneself to this RNG death maze pushes the border between leisure and proverbial self-flagellation to extremes previously thought impossible and just when you think it's taken everything it will unearth more to Dig from the hollowed out remains of your soul.

(18 hours played from a Family Share account) Shovel Knight Dig is a curious game to talk about, but the TL;DR is a cautious recommendation. As for details: There are many things I genuinely enjoy about Dig! The visuals are a great, natural extension of the original's style. The character interactions are lovely, particularly getting more screen time with Shield Knight for an absolutely charming dynamic with SK. The music is fabulous as well, and the general control scheme is easy to conceptually grasp for pick up and play sessions. Getting the normal ending is pleasantly quick once you have a grasp on what the game can throw at you, and fun to do! BUT. The game *will* sucker punch you with its game balance from the procedural generation. Some level gimmicks across the stage biomes are straight up death sentences compared to others in the same zone, and only with time and experience will you understand either how to survive them or outright avoid them. Upgrade RNG is wildly varied, with some runs through raining down loads of useful items and health upgrades while with others you only find expendable relics or one-time heals. Enemies of certain types or configurations will ambush you before you have an honest chance to react, and only with a pessimistic play style will you avoid unnecessary damage. Often there is just a bit too much going on with enemies and hazards to coherently decipher your next correct line of play. Importantly, the route to the true ending will test your patience, at least at this moment before the last big DLC update drops a balance patch to generation. It took me 8 hours of attempts to successfully achieve the true ending, mainly because the stage hazards and enemy groups will cause you to miss pivotal chances to progress the route and force you to begin again from scratch. If the game is aware that the true ending route flags are checked, some fixed items or room patterns would greatly reduce the literal trials and errors that come with attempts. As of writing, only 4.6% of players have achieved the true ending, which seems comically low, and speaks to how the game punishes players in a way that only RNG is capable of delivering. That said, I don't regret my time playing this, and I do want to try the Wish DLC when it launches! So that's a definitive compliment. Just understand that while at its heart I think this is a game made to be enjoyed, the procedural nature of this beast will tell you that you will try again, and again, for a majority of your game time.

Too many people slept on this game at launch. If you enjoy classic style action platformers and roguelikes/lites, this is going to be right up your alley. The only nitpick I have is that the screen is panned a little too far down, but it's easy enough to adjust to without even thinking about it. So, sit back, grab some gems, and enjoy yourself!

Very enjoyable game, and addicting if you're a fan of roguelikes. A pretty packed game; the visuals are great, the level themes, for all of them being underground, are interestingly varied, the equipment and items are incredibly useful and fun, and the music is outstanding; Nothing less expected from Jake Kaufman. The level gimmicks are pretty straightforward and are well used, this is impressive when you consider the random level generation mixed in with that. There's also hidden details that you find out and take advantage of every now and then, like the water clearing out the muddy relic, and how defeating a boss while dying actually revives shovel knight and it counts as a victory- which no game i've played has done, yet it's a thing every player wants. There's all sorts of stuff like that to look out for in this game. And no spoilers, but getting the true ending feels incredible. I guess it's because of how difficult it is, but hardly any game made me feel excited for a good ending this much. In general the whole thing has me reeled in, it's a real treat for classic pixel art game enjoyers. However, it's a bummer how difficult and outright brutal it can be at times, especially since the only thing to look forward to after completing the game is even more difficult challenges, it also doesn't help that luck has a great influence on your successful runs, sometimes all it takes to win is crazy luck with the health upgrades. I appreciate how the devs constantly add quality of life changes, bug fixes and other minor features to the game, but none of them really made the game considerably any less difficult, which I don't mind myself, but this whole thing makes it harder to recommend the game to someone else. It just narrows the audience for shovel knight further. And heh, *tips helmet* as a shovelhead myself i'd say that's not too shovelful. Do I like this game? Hell yeah! Would I recommend it? Hmm..... maybe? It's a hit or miss depending on who you are, but if it hits, it hits hard, so yeah sure i'd recommend.

Ended my first run getting to the credits after 3 and half hours A very fun and challenging roguelike, sadly it doesn't seem to have much content but every world is so different and crafted so well it might not be easy to add more of the base game caliber This game is joy for the eyes and ears, I'll keep playing (and possibly going for 100%)
