The computer is playing chess but you're not. What I mean becomes fairly obvious at the higher difficulty when you have to actually look at the board and see how the computer is going to try to trap you or how it's positioning a bishop or a queen behind a pawn. You're not playing chess; however, you are playing a turn based shooter. You are desperately trying to keep your damage and ammo replenishment up so you don't find yourself helplessly trapped in a game of chess you can't win. The game is in a tug-of-war between these two genres. You don't want to play chess. You want to keep the pieces away from you and kill the dangerous ones well before you have to think about what they're doing. The computer wants to hound you and box you in. I didn't really see the interesting dynamic until the third or fourth difficulty rank, but it's interesting when the computer starts thinking about what it's doing and really tries to get you.
So I refunded the Steam version of this game after learning it was available on mobile, and I probably have a couple dozen hours on this now overall at the time of this review. Each round you get a buff for your king, paired with a buff for the opponent's pieces, stacking between rounds, making your king super strong while also building the opposing army. Runs are pretty quick, and each loss feels fair, while wins feel skillful. Sometimes it boils down to luck (buffs appearing between rounds, shotgun spread, enemy move order is mostly randomized at the start of each round, but generally consistent across runs) You're basically blasting your way through generated chess puzzles influenced by the buffs you choose to pick up. Blasting pieces off the board is simple and satisfying. If you enjoy roguelikes and understand the basics of chess, this game is pretty good.
Deceptively a lot of fun despite its silly premise. The upgrade system a pretty compelling way of elevating difficulty as you go through a run, and the upgrades themselves are well-varied and interesting. Apart from beating the game to rise in difficulty ranks, most of the game is just achievement hunting, which is mostly just rolling the dice on RNG to give specific combination of upgrades. If you're averse to getting screwed by RNG, this game is probably not for you, RNG plays a significant role from upgrade choices, grenade bounces, and to where pellets go in high arc shotguns. In highest ranks of difficulties though, the viability of most of the shotgun options drops drastically (though probably not impossible), and the game devolves to simply restarting if you don't get the relevant upgrades within the first few levels. The lack of versatility in the higher difficulties makes it a lot less fun, and a lot more punishing when RNG gives non-synergistic upgrades.
