Worth every penny. It takes alot of inspiration from various other games I've played. The elevator pitch is Xcom 2 crossed with Darkest Dungeon 1 crossed with FTL, with Vermintide monsters. So if you know those games, you pick up the mechanics fairly quickly though there are some variations on themes. I beat it on normal. It was a nailbiter. I won't spoil anything, but the maps I'd call "curated." I had one mission where I realized I had to sacrifice someone for the squad to have a chance to make it out. I made the mistake of naming one toon after myself, but you get attached to them pretty quick (I used Ultima character names mostly) and they get quite skilled. Enemy reinforcements come out of nowhere, and you can feel overwhelmed with zombie like hordes quickly... but your elite troops start to work like Xcom2 elite troops and take out huge numbers (Iolo, usually my wimpiest Ultima friend, was an amazing overwatch sniper by the final mission). I do wish there was more flavor text, especially when camping (since they are cribbing from DD1) but there's some. I wish there was a kill count per character (there is one at endgame, but it incorrectly did not have the valiant sacrifice of Mors Gotha Minax listed, and said I lost 0 survivors). There's team skills and resources and you're always behind the curb mostly with supplies, but on normal it was the right feel of pressure. I may re-install it down the road for a harder run or with more DLC. Even if not, it was worth the money for 12 hours or so (and I usually shy away from short-life games). Fun. Lastly, I'll mentioned when I bought it there was some kind of bug, I couldn't start a new game -- I posted on steam forums and literally a developer fixed the issue within hours.

Only a couple of hours in and I can tell, this is my jam! X-Com like combat with darkest dungeon "in between" management, visible weapon upgrades, demanding but fair combat, the artstyle and the flair of steampunk its just an all around banger. plus, two free (content) dlcs is just a treat. the only paid dlc is a digital compendium which I gladly bought to further support the creator, just because the other DLCs are free - this kind of practice should be rewarded. if you are like me and sometimes spend an hour just browsing steam but just skipping over everything because nothing grips you in the first few pictures...give this one a try.

Xcom in a SteamPunk World but againts rats, also it has a "camp managament" function like Darkest Dungeon. You don't have Dr. Valhen or Shen telling you not to throw greanades because you will destroy the loot, instead you will have your companions cursing you if they got caught in the middle of the explosion XD And well it's a roguelike game too, it feels like you start with the "IRON MAN" from the beggining. The DLCs and future updates are usually free. If you like turned based-combat / roguelike games, this game may be a good choice for you!!!

Just finished the game for the first time. And I have to say it is INCREDIBLE! This is literally one of the best turn-based tactics in years! If not for JA3 I'd call it the best since X-Com 2 (from Fireaxis). It is a beautiful blend of X-Com and Slay the Spire with great pixel visuals. You play as a small team of soldiers on a deadly mission. Your resources are very few and you need to choose your path among enemies-infested streets (and sewers) very carefully. Once the location is chosen the battle starts. Combat is a polished "two-action system" (you saw similar combat in Shadowrun, XCom and Halfway). Each soldier has a unique weapon and a set of skills. You unlock and upgrade skills and improve your weapons during the rest between missions. The game creator really loves turn-based tactics and it shows. Shardpunk is lovechild of the genre. It plays great and smooth. The game gives a huge satisfaction weather you blow enemies away with grenades, put them down with sniper fire or cut them down close and personal. There are some comments saying that the game is too hard and some saying it is too easy. For me personally it's pretty well balanced. I've lost my first run (took me a couple of hours), but got a handle of it after that and completed the game in my second run. Normal difficulty. It's typical to "solve" these games and develop OP strategies to win every battle as you play. In my opinion it is all a part of the fun and I keep coming back to these games for years, despite "solving" them once. I love the game and really hope the developer will release a lot of DLCs (new enemies, new maps, new story, new characters etc) or Shardpunk 2. Highly recommended!

I grabbed this game on sale cause I love turn-based strategy and steampunk themed games. For what it is, It's ok. I was comparing it to X-COM the whole time in terms of execution. Graphics: 7 *I like pixel art. *Each character and monster model had a distinct look. *The environments were a bit bland, you were either in a building or outside running in between buildings. *The variation in deaths with the blood were good. *The character portraits could have looked a bit better, all characters have the same frumpy face. Music/sound: 6 *There's only a few tracks yet they are atmospheric, especially before you get into battle. *Once you're in the first battle of the level, the battle music plays all the way to the end. I much preferred X-COM's way of going back to the quiet and tense music when not in battle. *Menu sounds are distinct and quiet. *Sound effects for weapons and abilities aren't annoying. Gameplay: 5 *Party size is 4 plus the automaton. If you find another person after 4, you have to boot someone out. * Rats aren't too bright. No advanced tactics like pincer moves or singling out the automaton (If your robot is disabled and not repaired in 4 turns, you lose) and they will run right into you if you let them. * Lack of personality in characters. No banter or roleplay elements. * Plot is thin despite the opportunity given to develop characters and the environment the game is set in. There's a few cutscenes to tell the story but the story feels sparse. * Controls aren't intuitive but after the first level I had the hang of it. *Normal difficulty is merciful with your characters becoming disabled. My automaton was surrounded by 6 rats and didn't lose all its HP in one turn. *First few levels are the hardest because your characters are pathetic, but the power creep ramps up quick and missions feel more trivial deeper into the game. Rats' power curve doesn't keep up. *Unlocking bunkers is a nice touch, having the option to escape the level right away or fight it out for more (possible) loot. *Leveling is corporate, not individual. I don't like this because there's no incentive to make a character do more for more XP. I picked up a survivor late in the game and she was the same level as everyone else. Replayability: 5 *You can play subsequent games with different characters and automatons you unlock. *But you play through the same plot. Overall: 5 It's OK. If you catch it on sale, it's a decent buy which will keep you entertained if you love turn-based strategy games. I found myself comparing it to X-COM a lot and being sad on what this game could (and should) have done better but did not. Decent game if it's an indie release, but a subpar quality game if it's released from a more high profile studio.
