I’m conflicted about this game. I quite like the gameplay and what it adds to the Shantae series, but I feel that the pixel art style has really run its course. Let’s start with the positives. I liked how this game expands the gameplay. There are more areas to explore, abilities to collect, bosses to fight, really all things a good metroidvania should do. The controls felt a bit floatier than the game before, but it’s allowed for more varied movement so I’ll let it slide. The music is amazing as always, and the new voice acting for some of the dialogue is cute. The designs for the new areas and characters are also well done. ======= Major Spoilers I particularly liked the design for the Pirate Master. The design of the skull was really fun, but retroactively having Risky be wearing his face as her top and bottoms was wild. I loved the extra characterization they gave to Risky. It really felt like her and Shantae were bonding through the game even if she didn’t want to admit it. . >>>>>>> Spoilers Over This game was certainly a step up in difficulty with that also being reflected in the achievements. I can’t tell you how many times I had to repeat bosses for certain achievements or how stressful the speedrun achievements felt nearing the end. I definitely made things more difficult for myself by going for no health upgrades on my first playthrough, but we manage. I quite liked the pixel art in the first game and it fit really nicely, but here I can’t say the same. It’s not really the art style's fault, but the mixing of different pixel resolution and sizing with the item pick ups really takes me out of it and alongside the heavy reuse of assets from the previous game, the game looks cheaper and more poorly made despite its quality. It really is time for the series to step into full-on drawn 2D graphics, which is what awaits me in the next installment, but I digress. Overall I liked this game, but not as much as the previous. 6.5/10
When I say that this is what a follow up game done right looks like, I seriously mean it. This took all of the good aspects of Risky's Revenge and kept them, and the flaws were improved upon so much, that this is just a super good experience throughout. There isn't a single thing I really have to complain about when it comes to this game. I found the graphics are really nice and charming. Personally, I really like the idea of having a pixel style game with more detailed sprites, I feel like thats something the Shantae franchise does that no other franchise does super often, and it's a really unique approach to a game aesthetic. I honestly found the idea of Shantae and Risky Boots teaming up really interesting, and it had me sucked in the entire time. A hero and a villain both teaming up for a game, and the fact that they both have polar opposite, yet really charming and lovable personalities only made the story so much better. I think they both go really well together, they're a sweet duo that you gotta love. What surprised me the most was just how much they improved the map system and the overall layout of the world compared to Risky's Revenge. I found that the layout of the world and the map was super difficult to follow in Risky's Revenge, to the point where I got stuck multiple times and needed a guide to even know where to go next (this was the only flaw in that game, and it was great in every other aspect), whereas the map and world layout in this game is so much cleaner and easier to follow, that it just made the game so much better. I didn't really need any pointers to know where to go, the map was super straightforward and clean, and it just led to an overall amazing experience. Overall, Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is a significant step up from Risky's Revenge, as it keeps what made the previous game great, and improved on what kept it flawed. The characters are loveable, the story is amazing, the gameplay is clean, and the map is much easier to follow. I can't recommend this game enough. If you got stuck on Risky's Revenge, and found the layout made it difficult to progress, please try this game. I can't stress enough just how much of an improvement Shantae and the Pirate's Curse is!
