"Stealth" and "linear" are two words you usually never want to see in the same sentence. But Shadwen is still quite fun to play once you get used to the tools you have - and the various environmental hazards you can manipulate - to help you dispatch of some of those guards. The AI of the guards is ropey, to say the least. Their field of vision is quite small, and don't seem to notice when you backstab others even when you're right behind them, suggesting limited hearing as well. The girl (Lily) you need to escort from hideout to hideout can often get away with quite literally walking under a guard's nose. But then you feel this is necessary, for the game to prevent the enemies from spotting Lily, as there's nothing worse or more annoying than an escort quest where your charge blunders in and gets killed themselves. Maybe it's a wise choice for the game to verge on the lenient side. The level design is visually repetitive (although quite polished) and is indeed very linear, but you can use your grappling hook to pull stuff around and create diversions, or even (and this was my favourite bit) pulling a keg of gunpowder onto a campfire and causing the resulting explosion to kill two nearby guards. The wide variety of ways you can kill enemies, often involving a combination of two items, almost veers Shadwen into immersive sim territory, but not quite, because of the linearity and the fact that it doesn't really feel like a lived-in world: the guards make too many mistakes and repeat too many conversations to be convincing as real people. Plus, there's virtually no in-game lore to dig into, and the story is as minimal as they come, so there is that sticking point to contend with. Because of this, it's only a moderate recommendation from me, but you can enjoy Shadwen as long as you don't go in expecting a Thief-like or a Splinter Cell-like. It's more akin to Styx, I'd say. Be aware also that there is no non-lethal takedown: it's kill or evade only, and taking the distraction route instead can be tedious and time-consuming.

Uh Mazing! A great stealth game where you move quickly in the shadows! In 3d too! Also comes with a neat level editor! I admit the guards are a bit dumb but this is a very fun game with a great great story! Rating 8/10

Very fun little game, with a really good pacifist route. Its basically a stealth puzzle platformer where your job is to run around the levels and distract guards to clear a route for your little girl companion. It may sound like a long escort mission but the little girl is invincible/invisible tot he guards and her AI is pretty good as long as you create a route for her. Its a stealth game that really focuses on manipulating guards and running away from guards rather than just hiding from them. You can also kill them if you want to but the pacifist route is really fun. The character has very good movement and is basically a parkour acrobat. The plot is very generic and the levels get pretty repetitive so I've had to take breaks and play it across multiple sessions, but the core gameplay loop is very fun. Haven't finished it yet but I think it will last about 4-5 hours.

Purchased for a steep discount. Overall very well done, high production values. Stealth mechanics were easy to understand and use; grappling hook mechanics were not as easy to use; crafting and upgrades basically weren't necessary at all in my session (played to completion). I didn't find any situations that required use of the crafted equipment, and I think that was a missed opportunity in design. Feels like the equipment was an add-on and not wholly incorporated into gameplay, could have been cut and the game still would have been good. Progression overall was fairly flat, the situations became a bit more difficult but not more clever or substantially more interesting, but still generally enjoyable. AI was well done overall, some clever work there in making the NPCs feel intelligent. Nice light storytelling, One of the smartest things the designers added is the merciful "rewind time" mechanic that effectively makes the game a no-fail experience and able to be completed in 6 - 10 hours. I think my session time was 16 hours but I left the game on overnight :) Nice job, developers.
