June 2025
“Serious Sam Classics Revolution” is a port to modern systems of the legendary first two games of the series. The developers have kept both first-person shooters as they were, although including various bugfixes and applying the last engine updates to both titles in their state before the (rather mediocre) HD remaster. In my opinion, “Serious Sam – The First Encounter” and “The Second Encounter” up until today are the best of the franchise. They have a simple game concept of fighting off masses of enemies in huge arenas with a varied arsenal of weapons. The overall setting and story are a homage to the early Duke Nukem titles, yet has its own, funny style. At the time Serious Sam was rumoured to be Croteam’s answer to the never-ending story of “Duke Nukem Forever” getting released “when it’s done”. The plot is quickly explained: Serious Sam gets sent back in time to prevent the evil alien “Mental” and its minions to destroy Earth. After about 12 hours play time in a normal approach, here’s my pros/cons list: The First Encounter (about 5 hours play time): Pros: + port to modern systems very well done + great retro feeling + trashy style + varied levels + Duke Nukem homage + overall simple but very entertaining game mechanics + simplistic first-person shooter + most enemies for most part feel consistent with Ancient Egypt theme + huge levels + great journey through famous sights of ancient Egypt + crazy enemy types + silly humour + masses of enemies to fight against + dynamic music + varied music + some real-life info about the historical sites + huge end bosses + secrets to find + some small riddles + quirky Sci-Fi setting + challenging on higher difficulty levels Cons: - Gameplay does get monotonous after a while - Weapon sounds - Some sounds rather muffled - Although levels are varied, the overall landscape could have been more diverse Conclusion: Serious Sam – The First Encounter is a simple, but super fun, quirky 1st person shooter. When having finished the final boss fight, you will most probably have killed about 3.000 or more enemies in your playthrough. Very good for just switching off your brain and keep pulling the virtual trigger. The team that made the port has done a very good job. Rating: 7/10 points ------------------------- The Second Encounter (about 8 hours play time): + port to modern systems very well done + great retro feeling + trashy style + levels even more varied than part 1 + different landscapes and vegetation + direct connection to part 1 + continuing ancient civilisation theme (at least for 2/3 of the game) + more detailed environment + super funny and atmospheric medieval levels + kept characteristic musical style + a few new weapons + higher quality enemy models + boosts added to the game mechanics + more secrets to discover + many new enemy types + some small riddles + funny, varied arenas + great second to last battle arena with huge amounts of enemies before the final boss + very challenging on higher difficulty levels Cons: - Enemy types feel less consistent with the setting, especially the new ones - Last arena before the final boss is too big, enemies spawn too far apart, hence it takes a lot of running around and waiting until it’s finished, making it very arduous and time consuming - Some levels feel a bit stretched, from a spatial as well as play time perspective Conclusion: Overall, the sequel “Serious Sam – The Second Encounter” keeps the basic characteristics as well fun mechanics of its predecessor and improves on the weaknesses. Especially the more varied levels and landscapes make the game more appealing. Seldom has a developer team made such a good job in making the second game better in such a consistent way. The team that made the port has done a very good job as well. Rating: 8/10 points

A true remaster of the classics. The original First and Second Encounter combined, polished up and modernized. Highly recommended as an unadulterated modern replacement for the originals.

Have to played Sam in years. I checked this out because it has a new level not on SS1 or 2nd encounter. Started playing it and of course I got sucked in. Serious sam has that "it" factor that makes it fun no matter how old the graphics are. A classic and yes worth getting. They fixed many bugs that I don't know if are even fixed in the HD versions. And it still has old school LAN mode. You don't see that much anymore This game is a true gem and timeless classic that every PC gamer should own.
