I love this game so much that I left it on for 3 days! Kidding, that was an accident. The Good News: I came here for fanservice. I got plenty of that, but also an excellent commentary on grief. Going through a loss myself at the time, this story was genuinely very helpful to me. Even if you don't care about the story, the game's writing is fun over all, & I'd definitely recommend stopping to read it; these girls are WILD. It can always get a laugh out of me no matter how I'm feeling. If writing isn't your cup of tea, never fear; the gimmicks & music in this game are just as solid. The Bad News: The good that SV did for everyone's movesets has been undone in this game. Ikaruga & Hibari are clunky to play again, you can't guard while comboing or already being hit unless you jump-cancel, pressing jump & then immediately guarding. TECH SHOULD NOT BE HIDDEN. Actually, jumping is how you get most of your momentum in this game. When stages were too hard, I just found myself spamming the jump then plunge attacks, which weirdly solved all my problems. This game has a lot of flaws, but this may be my favourite title in the series as everything about it is beautiful. This game means so much to me & it's what REALLY made Senran Kagura special for me.

Purchased for the fanservice, stayed for the fun gameplay. A more challenging musou-like game with great character variety (no clones) and good variety of enemies and boss fights.

for my first mainline game in the franchise, estival versus was surprisingly good. didn't care too much for the story, but the dialogue was entertaining enough to keep my attention, so I got a grasp on the plot either way. character balancing is a catastrophe to the point where some characters feel completely useless (ryobi, mirai, kafuru, hanabi), whilst others can essentially trivialise the entire game (KAGURA) <- most of the broken ones are post-story though thankfully luckily the game forces you to use specific characters during your first run-through of the story so you get the full experience of both sides of that comically unbalanced spectrum. 100% completing this game was a little bit tricky, and by that i mean specifically breaking the 80 festival platforms, which had me searching all over google for guides and videos because some of them are hidden in ridiculous places. aside from that, the achievements were mainly just completing the optional character missions, which was of course a blend of infuriating when forced to play as the weak ones, and brain rending when you were given the busted ones. satisfying and fun combat mediocre story comedic dialogue excellent soundtrack that's about it.

The short playtime here is totally wrong – I played this game to 100% completion on PS4, but only recently started re-playing on PC (because I only recently had a PC that could actually run the game properly). ^So that might be my biggest critique, is that when I bought this on Steam, I was pretty sure my old computer was going to be able to run it – i.e., I thought I met the system requirements – but in actuality it barely ran at all on that PC. I’d recommend being comfortably above the minimum requirements before you pick this up. To be clear, though, I would absolutely recommend picking this up if you’re a fan of musou games (e.g. Dynasty Warriors). I won't pretend that I’m an expert on the genre, or that I know what separates a superior musou from inferior ones, but for the most part, the game refrains from including cutscenes in the middle of missions (a huge pet peeve of mine in the musous I didn’t like), letting you simply focus on hacking and slashing. (The cutscenes before missions can run a little long, though, and there’s one before every story mission. Just something to be aware of.) I really do like the hacking and slashing itself though. All of the girls control pretty differently from one another, and there’s really only a couple I don't like playing as (the heavy-hitters, basically, since it’s much harder to actually do the hacking and slashing). I’m also particularly fond of the ability to switch characters mid-battle, and the way you can fly into the air to chase after an enemy feels great every time you do it. I’m not personally huge on the parrying mechanics, which you do end up using pretty frequently, but that’s more because I’m not huge on parrying in most games; it’s not an unbearable feature by any means, and I suspect most will just shrug and say “sure, this is fine.” Arguably, it’s even a strength of the game, since it’s asking you to slow down and think a little, instead of just hammering the buttons to get through a mission. (As a side-note, the game’s opening mission is actually an exception to both of the things I just mentioned – it interrupts the mission about halfway through in order to dump a little lore, and the girl you play as is one of my least favorites. That said, in the mission immediately after, you get to play as Yumi, maybe my very favorite in the game. So give it another mission or two if you’re not thrilled with that first one.) I suppose at this point I ought to address the clothing – or lack thereof – in this game. Obviously there’s boobs all over the place. I’m not honestly convinced there’s a single male in this entire game, generic enemies included, and of course, as you damage the other ninjas you’re fighting, generic enemies included, your opponents’ clothes will tear and fly off into the ether, bit by bit, until they’re finally left naked and defeated. (This also happens to you, as you hit certain damage thresholds.) Personally I think this is more something that’s just there than it is something that’s gonna help you get your rocks off. To me, Senran Kagura is sort of like Cheetos – as you’re eating it, you know it’s junky, and you know it’s not great for you, but it scratches a certain flavor itch that you’re not really gonna find anywhere else, and if it leaves your fingers coated in dust, you’ll put up with that because you gotta have those crunchy orange guys. In this case, as you look at the girls beat the clothes off of each other, you’ll know there’s better, more fulfilling gameplay out there, but the other musous of the world just don’t have Senran Kagura’s aesthetic , dammit, so you’ll soldier on through any awkwardness you may feel about the matter. The girls really are a delight to behold, by the way, and not just because of the real pairs of badonkers. I sincerely think there’s some great character designs here – in this house, we stan Yumi and Shiki and we will accept no criticism on the matter – so at the end of the day, you won’t catch me apologizing for playing a fun game with well-designed, colorful characters in it. I think that’s all I’ve got. Great game, as fun to look at as it is to actually play. If you’re fine with honkers galore, your PC can run it, and you’ve got the cash, I say give it a go!
