I don't much like fishing games or even the idea of them, and tho I recognise this as a classic I only ever played it once or twice in arcades in my youth and never on a console. WARNING you can no longer buy this game on the Steam storefront, so you'll need to be lucky enough to find a Steam key if you don't own this. So given the above why did this game have me hooked (sorry, expect a few more puns)? I did try it when I bought it and bounced off it again, but this time I took the bait...and fell in love to the point of going for 100% On reflection i think it's just the joyous, simpleness of how videogames used to work - this is NO sim, and yet it captures the essence of fishing (I know because a fishing friend IRL told me!) And it turns out, it's a fun, replayable video game like they used to make 'em. The Arcade mode is pretty superfluous after you get the gist of how to play and complete it with unlimited credits. The big tuna here is Original Mode which is basically like a career mode, takes a while, and helps you learn as you go. Before you know it you'll be pulling in whoppers like a health inspector at a badly-run Burger King. There's something about working out the technique and simple but twitchy controls, and soon the right location, the right time of day and the right persistence gives you all that lovely dopamine reserved only for doing hobbies via the medium of videogames. And then there's a practice mode where you can enjoy the mechanisms of the game (read: get achievements) without any time pressures. Not everyone will like this: it could be viewed as clunky to play, dated, repetitive and limited I guess but if it catches you like it did me, it's not a net you even want to escape from.

It pisses me off that these 10 year old who only play CoD and GTA five consider themselves ‘gamers’ when they haven’t even played this magnum opus that is SEGA Bass Fishing. SEGA Bass Fishing’s name must be said be said in whole to even acknowledge the game correctly; not ‘bass fishing’ but SEGA Bass Fishing. Any ‘flaws’ associated in this masterpiece are flaws of the players lack of skill and lack of appreciation for the art. It was said that on the Mayan calendar that the world would end in 2012, but they decided to cancel it due to the HD rerelease on Xbox 360, PS3 and Steam. The world has yet to acknowledge the euphoric and godlike value of SEGA BASS Fishing so we have been on a downwards spiral as a species ignoring this gift from the gods. There are two people in this world; SEGA Bass Fishing enthusiasts, and infidel philistines. SEGA Bass Fishing is no ordinary fishing game, it’s a way of life, a movement, philosophy some might say. SEGA Bass Fishing is a work of art, so high concept only true, enlightening individuals can appreciate with a high IQ. SEGA Bass Fishing can still be enjoyed lower to average IQ individual, but misunderstood by the plebeian mass media at large. ... It's an anomaly these days for a game to reel in such an emotional response in the player only to pull a bait-and-switch when you least expect it. I was kept at the edge of my boat seat from the moment the SEGA logo lured me in, I was ready. My heart was on the line along with the monster bass that swallowed my jig whole as he flailed under the dock as guitars seemingly from heaven itself pounded away as did the giant fish. I turned rod left IT'S COMING NEAR I turned rod right COME ON ALMOST THERE In a brief moment of glory the monsterous bass was lifted on to my boat, seemingly putting it on the edge of capsizing. THIS ONE'S HUUUUUUUGE! I ranked in my tears and felt the bonus of time rush over me. Thank you Sega, thank you.
