One of the strengths this game has - you can play it casually or you can "grok" the numbers to maximize the final few percentage points of advantage. The game plays smoothly. The map creation kit and scenario designer are easy to use, yet pay attention to details as there are subtlety under the hood. Included are many scenarios, campaigns with much replay value. The workshop contains many more of varying quality to test your skills. More options are promised by the developer with regard to the games future development. All in all this is a good solid buy for a Squad/Tank based game.

You may have heard of a old Avalon Hill hex-and-counter wargame called Squad Leader. Second Front is in most respects, a revisiting of the that subject matter. This is a a good thing. Without the overhead of having to deal with pages of rules and slow pace of play. Nonetheless, if you are not familiar with the genre then the difficulty curve will probably be vicious. Line of sight is king, and it may not at all be obvious what the line of sight will be at the end of your move. An overlay on current state of LOS does help, but the UI would benefit from having it showing for potential movement choices. Games are not normalised. RNG can and will punish valid decisions, just as it would in a tabletop game. To say nothing of the real world. Don't come here expecting instant gratification or artificial "fairness". Some of the objectives can seem unreachable in some scenarios, which is a bit of a pain - such scenarios would be called out as unbalanced and pruned from a lot of tabletop games intended for two players. But that said, I am very much enjoying the recent content update for the Commonwealth. These scenarios are a much better entry point to the system than those for Barbarossa at original launch. Tactical advice is more or less per the real world. Use suppression fire to pin and reduce the effectiveness of your opponent. Utilise cover to pick an engagement range of your choosing. DONT fight your opponents battle for them. Inferior tanks can beat good ones if you can sneak in close. Once suppressed, concentrate force at your chosen critical point, the schwerpunkt, to pick those enemies off. Tanks are more vulnerable than you think, but working in teams you will find opportunities for all important flanking shots. Infantry in bunkers can be cleared by keeping their heads down. Create the space for infantry to sneak in with a sack of grenades. Semi-immobile defenders may seem to have the advantage, but a well thought out attack can break the toughest fortress. These kinds of games can teach more about the sharp end of tactics than any run-and-gun ever will. For that, we can be thankful! You can and will have fun in this game for not that much effort.

This is an excellent game. i am an old dinosaur who played squad leader on the tabletop back in the 80's and this game plays very much like it. the community and dev support has been second to none. the first dlc was changed to a free lc great value there. great tutorials in game. a very deep complex game but easy to learn step by step.

This is a really well made strategy game inspired by Advanced Squad Leader. I really like the graphics and the gameplay is extremely challenging while remaining engaging. You want to be cautious and use cover but the turn limits for each scenario force you to be aggressive and take risks in order to achieve your objectives. Some scenarios can feel a bit locked in and scripted on replay due to this, but the variety of scenarios and campaigns help keep it fresh. A free expansion for the British Commonwealth forces was just released to the public and there is a roadmap for many more additions to the game, including multiplayer, the Pacific front, artillery, air support and a bunch more. The RNG can be brutal and you will feel like you have lost unfairly sometimes, but the developers have made it clear that is an intentional part of the game. I'm cool with it but not everyone enjoys that.
