Short and sweet. A quick warning: for those not in the right headspace, this game has references to self-harm and self-termination. It deals with struggles in life and if you're not in the right place to deal with this there are other games out there. The extent that this game covers those subjects isn't extreme, but it's there. So let's get one thing out of the way right off.. This isn't a 'platformer' in the sense that Inside or Limbo or Stela, Gris etc are. When I watched the previews, that's the vibe I got - Little Nightmares, Inside, blah blah. I was expecting wild chase scenes, getting mauled over and over by monsters until I got the action sequence down just right, solving complicated puzzles, and the like. This game is a lot more like a very interactive movie - although there are things you 'do' in this game, it's far less involved than others in the genre. Not to say it's one of those types where every now and then you click a button and that's it... No, again, it's quite interactive, just not as much so as some others in the genre. That being said, it's not one of those 'die a million times before making it to the next scene' games. There is danger, and you can die, but it's not unforgiving. There also aren't really any in-depth 'puzzles.' There are a few light 'make your way over here to further the story, and you'll have to search a little for the way' bits here and there, but nothing that will cause any real stress. This game is far, far more about the story, the scenery, the symbolism than the gameplay. That might be a 'pro' or a 'con' for you depending on what style of gameplay you're in the mood for.. just making it very clear what you can expect from this title! Personally I liked it. I very much enjoy the harder platformers, yes, but games like this are very nice to just 'escape' into every once and a while... sometimes it's nice to beat a game without jumping out of a third story window every couple hours. I beat this game after about 3.5 hours. I did not get all achievements, and I likely won't go back to get them all, but I don't imagine it would take a lifetime to do so. I'll give a brief synopsis while avoiding as many spoilers as possible. Our protagonist Kay wakes up in a strange, dark world filled with monsters. She, herself, is also a monster. This dark world is filled with corruption - painful memories and painful truths. Kay has to confront these memories and truths to banish the darkness and defeat the monsters - and find a way to find a way back from being a monster herself. With help from some friends, can she learn to deal with the pain in her life, right the wrongs, and bring light back to the world? Most of it is walking around and occasionally jumping a little, or zipping around in your motorboat. Finding your way isn't terribly difficult - you have 'flares' you can cast into the sky which will almost always point the way, so if you're stuck, it's easy to get back on track. You do little tasks, avoid being eaten by monsters, and work your way through the story. I wasn't particularly emotionally 'moved' by this one. There were sad parts and happy parts, creepy parts and cool parts, but I never really found myself deeply and powerfully moved. This is not to say it's a bad story, and I could see some folks being quite touched by it, indeed. Maybe it's just something I don't connect with. I don't know. Again - not a bad story at all. I really enjoyed it. Just putting it out there that if you're looking for something that's going to emotionally shake you to your core, this may not... or maybe will... be it. Hard for me to say. The graphics were very nice and pleasing to watch. The controls did not feel clunky or glitchy, except for some parts where I felt a little frustrated with the jumping mechanics. The music was very beautiful and the sounds natural-sounding. The voice acting was occasionally a little cheesy but not to the point of being a real distraction or moment-breaker (at least for me). Overall, a very, very pleasing play-through experience, and I'm glad I had the chance to play. The final question I always ask in my reviews is: worth full price? Well, I don't know - for 3.5 hours to play through, $20 is a bit of a steep price tag unless the game is just 'that' amazing. While I really did have a great time playing it, I don't know if I would have felt fully satisfied had I actually paid $20 for it. Again, I wouldn't discourage anyone from giving it a try... but what I would encourage others to do is wishlist it and wait for it to go on sale. I've seen this one pop up on sale from time to time for a while now, and just decided this time to pull the trigger on it. I think I paid somewhere from $5-$7 for it, and that's a fine (and possibly ideal) price. If you can catch it in that price range, it's a very good bang for the buck. Overall, very short, very nice, and TOTALLY worth it if you can catch it under that $20 cap!
