Awesome Hack and Slash + Roguelike Gem! The artstyle may not be appealing to me at first but the its fluid combat animation and gameplay has impressed me a lot. The learning experience is very nice and even though I had yet to beat the game or unlock everything, I am addicted to the game after a few hours.

It's a recommend but with a forewarning; to me it's more of a "mixed" game than a "good" game... whatever that is. The art style is beautiful, story is minimalistic but interesting, and the levels are good, but the gameplay... the issue lies with the way the game is balanced, it has a lot of problems when it comes to the pacing, the way dodging and parrying works, and the type of philosophy design behind the encounters; this is one of those games were you feel like you have to cheese the game in order to win, rather than grind or get good at it. For example, you can eventually get an upgrade that lets you parry bullets and "reflect" them back into the enemy, pretty cool right? But here's the thing, you have to time the parries so you reflect a string of bullets, if you don't time it right, you can reflect two of the three bullets and still get hit by the last one. The game also has issues when it comes to pickups and overall upgrades, each of the upgrades you get in your runs feel a tad bit inconsequential... because they are, it's stuff like: reduce the cost of shop prices the lower your HP is, but then you get to the store with two out of three HP and five of the options on offer are HP and a gun... The game has accessibility options and upgrades, but the accessibility settings don't change much -unless you enable invulnerability mode straight out-, and for the most part they seem more like a menu to tailor de balance of the game, rather than a menu to tailor YOUR individual experience. Like the game has an option to increase the HP pickups, but if you don't enable this option, you literally don't get HP pickups in a lot of the stages! Like at all, YOU DON'T GET THEM. But here's the thing, if you enable this option, you get them rarely, like freaking each two rooms out of the ten in each stage; and these health pickups usually give you one hp out of 13 or something ridiculous like that. I like challenge in games, as long as the challenge is well implemented and I can jive with it, but here it feels as if the dev attempted to make the game frustrating and obnoxious just to make it challenging for the sake of being challenging. Just because a game is challenging doesn't mean is fun or engaging, a lot of it is HOW is that challenge handled; is it well implemented? Does it function in tandem with the game's mechanics? The problem with this title is that it relies too much on the challenge to create an engaging experience, but it fails in actually developing that glue to hold the entirety of the experience together; you feel as if your losses have more to do with the messy design, rather than with your actual ability to play the game. As an end result, you end up enabling the accessibility settings, because who really wants to play the first stage of the game 30 times or so? Is good, but be prepared to tweak those accessibility settings, or to bang your head against a wall for a couple of dozens of hours in what is an otherwise short game.

As amazing as the first few hours were, it got repetitive FAST. Good game for a little while, might be nice to pick up on sale. The game is fast paced and awesome, the music and visuals are also really good, and the movement is snappy and satisfying... most of the time. The dash tracking-to-enemy can get a little annoying. Solid 7.5/10

This is a good game, but understand what you are getting into. I'm not bad at games, I'm not the best but i'd certainly say that I know how to play effectively and learn quickly, ESPECIALLY with rogue-likes. Some titles I could mention are: Hades, Skul the hero slayer, Death must die, Picayune dreams, Vampire Survivors, and recently Against great darkness and Boneraiser minions. In all of these games I either felt like I as a player was becoming more skilled, or at the very least my character was getting stronger so I could make it further each run. That being made clear: I have been humbled beyond belief by this game. I thought to myself when searching for a game to buy: "I want a challenge, a game that can actually test my skill." and oh boy did I get it. When the game boots up, it says "Adaptive game difficulty is enabled by default, and can be disabled", and my first thought was, "don't worry, im not a game journalist! give me the intended experience =)" now 4 and a half hours later, I am slapping myself, angry that I am dwelling over the thought of turning it on again, or choosing the option to increase health drops. Before going into spoiler territory I can sum it up like this: this game is the rogue-like version of "Hyperlight drifter", where you have a sword that can regenerate a gun after striking enemies. If what you want is to have TIGHT combat, and dedicate time to memorizing enemy attack patterns and developing full-proof strategies, this is the game for you. But if you think that with your fast movement you can just spam buttons, and by buttons I mean ANY button, even the movement buttons, you WILL lose. Ok "spoilers" if you want to understand what I mean without being cryptic, idk if they count as spoilers though im just being safe: -Think of almost every rogue-like, every game for that matter. there is some form of an invincible dash. a movement option that not only makes you move quickly, but makes you invulnerable during that time. This does not exist in Scourge Bringer. This isn't slander on the game by the way, its a bold choice, and by god does it completely change the way you interact with the game. The security that being able to press a single button, and get a get-out-of-jail-free card ANY TIME something goes south by being invincible and moving to safety at the same time, is a crutch you do NOT know you have until its gone. You do have a dash in this game, but it acts as a dash/strike, it does the same damage as a basic strike, but has no invincibility. it only offers movement. You may think that this is enough, but most of the time its completely worthless, serving only as a distance closer between enemies to kill them before they can attack, because the moment bullets come, the odds of you dodging multiple projectiles at once are slim to none. -The Parry in the game, or the "smash" can be used to stun enemies, or reflect/ destroy bullets. this is your only defense option, besides comboing this with the dash after you unlock the ability to do so (which isn't very helpful either iv found). There is a slight delay on this parry, and without an upgrade that you can get mid-run, the area feels PAINFULLY small compared to the types of attacks you will be facing throughout a run. Your best bet is to focus on stunning enemies, and only parry bullets when needed, since getting cocky and parrying too many bullets WILL lead you to getting hit after missing a parry. Combine these two, and now defense needs to be actively thought of at the same time as attacking, in a way you would never realize, and wasting any valuable time on making a decision will inevitably fill the screen with bullets eventually, ruining any chances of getting out unscathed. If you still don't understand, play the game. be humbled, because sometimes that the kind of feeling you need to get better.

Runs are quite short because you'll tear through the enemies and rooms at breakneck speed. It's very easy to take damage if you aren't able to be precise while operating at a fast pace. The upgrades are pretty repetitive and the unlocks feel more like the introduction of new mechanics than anything that excited me too much. At least you don't start with all of that stuff, or it would have been a bit to digest all at once. ScourgeBringer is very impressive and a rush, but I've found I need to play it in small bursts. Narrowly recommend it.
