I strongly recommend this game to anyone interested in the "detective" genre of puzzle games. The game just gives you a room to walk around in and challenges you to piece together your own timeline of events. Other reviews on here seem to complain that the game relies on leaps in logic or making assumptions, but I can't say that I had the experience. However, there are times when the games wants you to apply character motivations to fill in the gaps in the available physical evidence. I think of this as a strength of the game, not a flaw, as I found these instances to be particularly engaging. My flaws with the game are purely mechanical. Moving around and manipulating the camera can be a little janky. I also found ot frustrating that I could not close doors that I had opened. There were a few instances where i felt that being able to reclose a door after opening it would've given important information. I noticed frames take a significant dive in the final bonus level. These flaws may have been more pronounced as I played this game on a Steam Deck. Given that the game doesn't demand much mechanical skill from the player it was easy to i overlook these flaws. I hope that EQ produces more games like this. While I enjoyed their last game, I found this one to be more satisfying in the detective-puzzle department.

I'd score it about a 7.5/10. I wish it were a bit more realistic in terms of a police investigation. Each case you are essentially dumped into a crime scene with absolutely no knowledge of the crime, the victims, or even which body was found where. For me, it just seemed a little tedious to have to figure out all the basics based on receipts in wallets or post-its scattered around the place. I think the game would be better if it were centered more on figuring out the crime and tracking down the criminals rather than on figuring out which chalk outline referred to which person. On the plus side, if you like escape room type logic puzzles, this is definitely for you. Lots of obscure clues and references scattered about each location. Many of the solutions require you to make jumps of logic based on very little information. For me, it was generally fun for about the first 2 of the major cases. By the 3rd one, I was starting to burn out on it. Overall, if you like logic puzzles, it's a good game. Personally, I was hoping for something a bit more investigative and more based on hunting criminals down.

Pretty good, provided you don't compare it to The Painscreek Killings--the developers previous title--compared to which it seems rather anemic. It's strange, but though I do recommend Scene Investigators, most of my considered reaction below is criticism: - Because the "Scenes" are split up, the game is deprived of the environmental worldbuilding demonstrated in the Painscreek Killings. - For the same reason as the above, there's very little character evolution outside of the "Missing" scenario--where it still feels rather shoehorned in. I loved learning about the characters different facets and secrets and varied relationships in Painscreek Killings, and that's largely absent here. Instead of a complex web of relationships, there are a few paragraphs and a lot of assumptions left to the player to fill in. Despite this criticism, The Scene Investigators is still the closest thing I've found to reproducing the excellence of The Painscreek Killings--one of the best games I've ever played--and it absolutely beats the half-dozen other games I've played in the hopes that they might reproduce The Painscreek Killing experience. Hopefully, the "Scene" format allows the developers to continue fleshing out the game with DLC.

I will say off the bat that the format of this game is not for everyone. Scene Investigators, similarly to EQ's other game Painscreek Killings, is absolutely designed to leave you to your own devices. I played with a friend because we always play these types together to bounce theories off each other, and it was EXACTLY the kind of thing we were looking for. Without giving away content, there were certain points where we were going back through a level to figure out what question(s) we got wrong and to correct them. And more than once, one of us would stop with dawning horror and go "...what if it's..." and find out it was correct. I loved the underlying stories, the way certain ones spanned across multiple levels (and you didn't know until you had all of it in front of you)... The amount of things designed to artfully throw you off... I really hope you guys make more games like this! There is something really refreshing about a pretty true-to-life 3D crime scene investigation game that makes you play detective as close to 'entirely on your own' (if you choose those settings) as possible.

Not many games have tried turning deductive reasoning into fun. Return of the Obra Dinn , sure, and The Case of the Golden Idol , but they both were a bit unhinged and fantastical. I was looking for something more intimate and grounded in reality. Enter Scene Investigators . Interesting omission of the word "crime", by the way, fitting the subdued atmosphere. No bloodied corpses here. You get unleashed in lived in environments (according to the making of PDF all of the everyday 3D objects are bespoke and not store bought assets, which is impressive) and dive into people's personal lives and items (wallets, calendars, grocery lists) HARD, all to answer highly specific questions ("Would this family's insurance plan cover accident X?", "Where exactly was person X on date Y, including the exact address?") and come up with a working theory. I actually like the "mundanity" of some of these exam questions, which highlighted the idea that you were trying to understand real lives, not just abstract crime puzzles. The amount of data to sort through can sometimes be overwhelming... which is why I've only finished the tutorial and "The Missing" so far, but I still want to give a recommendation to people who love snooping around and are willing to paint mental pictures. There once was a budget Nintendo DS detective game called Unsolved Crimes , a cooperation between a Japanese studio and the writers behind Driver . It didn't look like much, but was actually incredible: Several freely walkable 3D crime scenes, and you had a partner in tow that would ask you more and more comprehension questions as you searched around, picked up evidence and made sense of what happened. Most of these questions were multiple choice, but some required you to input names and numbers pertaining to the crimes that weren't always straight murders. It surely was a guided experience, but you still felt like you were connecting the dots. Scene Investigators IS a game, but probably not to all people, and borders on work sometimes, because apart from each case's test questions, there's no guiding hand telling you "Prioritize and solve this sub problem first in trade for a small reward sound". Be prepared for delayed gratification. But it will be worth it.
