This is surprisingly good. It’s one of the best in the bullet heaven genre. It feels like it took what Vampire Survivors did and took it to the extreme. It looks deep. I think it’s likely one of the best in the genre rivaling any bullet heaven. Not sure how much depth it has right now, will report back after some time.
Just a little over an hour into this game and love it! If you're a fan of Vampire Survivors you'll feel right at home with this. Plays the same with a better build systems and an "ultimate" that charges up over time giving you a screen clear. Its a nice change of scenery compared to Vampire Survivors and plays amazingly well on low end pc systems. The music is more of a CD quality which can take away from the retro vibe like V.S. but is still welcome. Purchased this game when it was $7 and worth every penny. $5 would be a steal but over $10 I would wait as this could easily be ported to mobile.
When a gameplay loop is built well, it becomes very hard to leave the next run for later I liked Scarlet Tower because it does not settle for just copying the formula of surviving waves and stacking upgrades. The foundation is familiar, yes, but the gothic tone, the day and night cycle, the classes, and the familiars give it a much stronger identity than I expected. What stood out most to me is the constant sense of growth it builds, the kind where every run leaves me with a different build in mind and the urge to push a little further. I enjoyed it mostly because of that balance between chaos and planning. Even when the screen is full of enemies, I usually felt like I was building something instead of just surviving on autopilot. It is still a loop driven game, so if I play it for too many hours in a row, the repetition starts to show. Even so, I recommend it to players who enjoy progression, builds, and games that are easy to get into but have enough depth to keep them around for a while.
