I bought this April 10th 2016, but just started playing it on August 31, 2024. I paid $9.89 for it back then and I see it's gone up 50% since since then. Its a bit of a strange game and I don't think the devs thought it out too much. They made some things super simple, like being able to summon your ship out of your inventory at any time and other things super difficult, like trying to figure out mapping and which way you're going.

I ran around a bit. Hit a deer a few times. Eventually did some other stuff. Always played solo. This was during my phase of "OMG OPEN WORLD SURVIVAL CRAFT IS SO NEAT." Feels like longer ago. I guess things change over time and I started wanting more substance. It's just pretty much alright.

Exploration, FTW! Fun first-person exploration game where you build your ship and head for the islands. But these are islands full of pirates and wild game with a few (very few) monsters mixed in. There are some quests, a bit of crafting, and lots of exploration to be done in this infinite sea. So tie that scurvy dog to the yardarm and hoist the Jolly Roger! Recommend.

Salt is primarily a game about exploration and sailing. The graphics are pretty basic but nonetheless often beautiful. The overall feel of Salt is generally tranquil, for example when you're out sailing, fishing, or exploring. It can be a very relaxing game. The combat is also pretty basic, except it can be challenging if you bite off more than you can chew. I personally found this aspect fun, as you can always return later with better gear if you're finding things too difficult. There is a hardcore (permadeath) mode if you're looking for even more challenge. Another surprising aspect of Salt is the depth. Not necessarily the quests, as they are usually straightforward, but the number of items and figuring out what to do with them will keep you busy for quite some time, especially if you don't Google the answers. Salt is basically an excellent game if you enjoy this genre, and great value for money.
