This game's really scratching a good itch for me. I used to play Sea of Thieves a LOT, and still play here and there. But the fanbase is, sadly, very toxic. And the PvP just ain't it for me. It's just too stressful and unfun overall. This game takes the bits of that game I enjoy, simplifies them in a chill way, and meshes it together with some like... Skyrim-feeling gameplay as well, among other things. The visuals are really pretty; they're not 4K UHD, but they don't have to be, and I'm GLAD they're not. They're simple, yet very pretty and appealing to look at. The audio design is pretty basic, but I actually like that about it. It's simple, and charmingly so. The music is pretty nice too, though I usually jam to my own tunes when I play this. I'm hoping to get some friends into it when the co-op update drops. I highly recommend this game.

This is kinda random but I think this game is actually the closest thing to Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall that is currently available to the public. The game is largely about always exploring, sailing to islands, exploring the islands, getting better stuff, doing randomly generated quests. The game actually has a lot of content variety with different factions you can join. There's one about diving, one about killing stuff, one about exploring and there are a few more, plus the main questline. There are quite a few carrots to keep you going like getting better gear but I think the biggest thing is actually probably cosmetics. The game has a lot of cosmetics that you can deck out your ship with and yes, the ship, your ship, is your home in this game and you bring it everywhere as you explore islands which come in a few different biome types. As you get wealthier you can get bigger and better ships. There are islands, different types of enemies, you want to eat to keep alive which is easy enough, the game has many dungeons too but it balances outdoor and dungeon content pretty well. Some people may not enjoy this but the world does scale up in power every 10 levels so do keep an eye out for better gear. There are also skill levels that you level up, like sword skill, gun skill, bow skill, gathering skill, exploring skill and more. Your character levels up but right now I don't actually remember if it's exp based or if it's elder scrolls style where leveling up skills will level your main level up. The developer has consistently been releasing updates and they've all been quite exciting in their own way. I think they have released a roadmap somewhere if I remember correctly so you can get an idea of what else they're considering to add to the game. It looks like they're currently spending about half of their development time on creating multiplayer which is in high demand by the playerbase and the playerbase seems to accept that feature development is being sacrificed to make multiplayer happen but updates have still been steady. Great game overall and I hope they see more success.

If you enjoy exploring, this is an excellent game. There are lots of locations and interesting things to discover in the Salt 2 world. I only have one gripe - The game would really benefit from a simple decent save / load game interface. As it is, you can only save your current position. And because you can't quit without saving, you can't "save in case you mess up" and then restore if you fail. So, like a few other games (I'm looking at you, There Are Billions), you are forced to quit the game and handle the backing up of save files from within the operating system. Come on Devs - What's wrong with F5 - Quicksave F9 - Quickload ?

TL;DR: It took me 75 hours to complete all of the main guild quest lines, but I enjoyed it enough to do so. All of the below is based on early access build, Nov 2024. The things I liked: - using a sextant for navigation gave the sailing a more authentic feel than having a typical compass and mini-map on the HUD - the parrying in melee combat was satisfying - the weapon levelling system - the trade skill system - the ship decorating Things that could be better: - be nice to have a main story quest that linked up to all of the guild faction quest lines - instead of a quest sending you to an island you've already cleared, it could easily send you to one you haven't cleared - while I liked the navigation system, more convenient options in the late game would be good - placement of decorations is finicky due to the boat movements, be great if sea ports had a "dry dock" we could use when we decorate - the textures in caves felt a bit bland compared to the rest of the game - while I liked the option of "tagging" islands, but wish it was a little more automatic Things I didn't like: - you had to be way too close to an island to map it, using telescope and sextant should be enough if it's within visual range - even though you didn't have to account for weapon drop for bows and pistols, you did for throwing knives. I understand it for the bombs, but it felt inconsistent - sometimes throwing weapons would get lost under the corpse of enemies you barely missed. they're there, but you can't get at them

Salt 2: Shores of Gold is a chilled game of exploration. Your ship is your home. In a procedurally generated world you can sail and explore to your heart's content. There is danger on the islands, sometimes unexpectedly. There are caves to explore but you never know what will be waiting for you in them. Tons of crafting to do, resources to harvest, and skills to level up. I recommend you enter the world of adventure and purchase this game :) Arr!
