A platform RPG that delivers in every way. You plant rice and tend it. The growing part is very in depth and you really have to manage your rice field. But not too in depth to spoil the game or hold up the exploration. Exploration is a lot of fun. Sakura hits hard and fast and can pull off quite large combos All in all this is the exact RPG I have been looking for for quite a while now. 10/10

It's not a game for everyone, because you will spend a lot of time taking care of your rice fields, learnign about the rice production cycle, along with exploring the world and gathering materials. So if you are interested in rice, there's a chance for you. The art is gorgeous, and the characters lovable. I loved Sakura's development. I hope to play a sequel some day.

Turns out playing this game was worth college credit toward my agriculture degree! If you ever wanted to learn everything there is to know about growing rice from sorting seeds to planting to how much water to keep in the paddy to weeding to harvesting to threshing to hulling (and that includes various methods for each step) then this is the game for you! The overall game is pretty good - fun combat, good story and characters, nice aesthetic, in-depth but not overbearing farming mechanics, etc - but it's not perfect. Sometimes you hit a wall in enemy levels and you just get destroyed until you level up more, sometimes items will need to be grinded in order to craft items or complete quests and there isn't always an easy way to do that. There aren't any major negative points, though, so I would still highly recommend it. It's a solid 8/10.

This game is a gem and it is a shame it didn't got picked up by more people. It is build on three pillars, the story of the rice goddess, fluid 2D combat with a lot of depth and rpg elements and of course rice farming. The latter can be a bit tedious early in the game but you will get tools to make your life easier. The rice farming will increase your base stats, you are a rice goddess after all, the better the rice the better your stats. You have some control over which stat increases too by the choices you make in your farming and production. Depending on what route you choose for the rice, you will have access to different food options which gives you buffs for your combat. Rice stats also unlock certain gear options. I'm truly amazed by the depth the combat has, especially because of the rpg elements. You have multiple slots to equip gear with varying stats and "Spirit Boughs", plus 4 skills slots and 4 "raiment slots", the latter are situational skills. Spirit Boughs are basically specials abilities varying from simple things like +Strength to something absurd like "Take double damage, but deal 50% more damage yourself" or "All Strength based damage is modified to Magic". Skills can be levelled too, so initial weak skills can be become completely broken once levelled to max rank. The outcome is a large variety of different builds one can pursue for varying situations, which you can even change mid fight most of the time. The attention to detail is quite astonishing as each individual gear item is rendered, you change your headgear, weapon, masks or garment and it will be reflected in your appearance. The story is very sweet and everything is fully voice acted. They use a mixture of hand drawn frames combined with the in game engine resulting in a very compelling package. It won't blow you away but it gets its point across. it is a love letter to JRPGs in the best sense imaginable. Sure, it can be a little grindy at times, especially if you are shooting for a game completion, but it is well worth it. One achievement mentions the Amagaeshi shrine, a dungeon area with increasing difficulty. You only need to get to lvl 100 to get the achievement BUT it goes all the way to 300. You will soon find yourself going through all your different items and spirit boughs to adapt your playstyle to a certain boss, which the main story doesn't really require you to. True to old-school jrpgs you will probably out level the content, at least I did as I got a little obsessed with trying to grow better rice. I noticed some minor hitbox detection issues and a few times it ate my inputs, I'm playing with keyboard and mouse though. While I would recommend a controller it is definitely not essential. TLDR: Underappreciated JRPG which is a shining modern example of how it is done right. Very in-depth mechanics that a lot of modern RPGs could learn something from. I consider it a classic already.

Summary: The best way to describe Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin is like a warm summer morning on the porch, sitting back while enjoying the cool breeze, doing absolutely nothing and enjoying every second of it. Essentially this game is a rice farming simulator with 2D combat stages where strong crops make your character stronger. The loop is careful planning and tending to your crop, then beating some animals with a raiment and farm tools. Gameplay Combat is a bit slow feeling (as well as somewhat unresponsive when you special attack one direction then try to switch directions) but otherwise fleshed out and feels well done. The farming is surprisingly fun and in-depth, where good farming practices are rewarded with decent permanent stat increases. Nothing feels particularly tedious, although it would be nice if you could gain stats faster since it does feel somewhat slow for story progression. Achievements Nothing particularly difficult, the most annoying achievement being the Aphid Invasion one where you must do a gauntlet (with checkpoints) for 100 levels defending a tree. Most come naturally as you progress provided that you do your best to make a strong rice crop. Story The vibes of this game are absolutely immaculate; the atmosphere is a Japanese farmstead with a small group of troublemakers turned friends where you only have to worry about your crop. You can take the story at your own pace. The overall story is well set up, like something out of an ancient Japanese tale to where it's quaint in sense of scale, very simple, and rather wholesome as you progress to the end. Hate None comes to mind, the only improvement I would make is a faster progression. The only real grind is leveling your character fast enough to keep pace with the story.
