March 2025
My entire interest in Sable was dependent on the fact that the art and style of the world reminded me of Moebius's comics (Arzach, etc). On this front, it more than delivers. It's beautiful and visually well-designed. The story is very Kiki's Delivery Service-esque. A coming-of-age exploration of the self. Go out into the world, and find out who you are. Really this just kind of means, what career does your character want to pursue? And you can choose this for Sable, based on your own interests in the game's various gameplay mechanics. Did you enjoy the climbing, the fishing, etc? This is the goal. It's a cool idea! Your journey is meandering and directionless, which is kind of nice. Drive wherever catches your eye, interact with the environment and NPCs however you like. There's no combat, no threats. You're just vibing with the land. This game is entirely chill. Maybe TOO chill. You have your goal, but there's no real story. No MAIN story. This would be fine, but side stories are short, and NPCs are shallow. The environmental storytelling is cool, but again is rather surface-level. I wish there was more. Is it me? Is it the writing? The game is just very BORING, to me. I felt like I had nothing to sink my teeth into. I would have loved to have seen more deeply established and compelling relationships with NPCs -- I really feel this is all that was missing. Also, the technical issues could be frustrating at times. Rarely does calling your bike actually work. Climbing had hiccups, at times, with occasionally not being able to grab onto climbeable surfaces. When you've just spent several minutes climbing an insanely tall structure only to plummet all the way back to the bottom... well. I also expected better bike customization options, considering your bike is a character, with a name, even. Customization Mad Max or Days Gone style. You don't even get a boost. Or anything that offers additional functions, new ways to interact with the world, whatever. Just a bunch of aesthetic customizations that only slightly alter stats. I'm not sure I recommend this game. I don't NOT recommend it, it's not bad, it just wasn't for me. Games don't need to have depth, but I prefer them to.

Wonderful game with an enchanting atmosphere. It captures that childhood sense of exploration perfectly -- with flying, mysterious masks and endless curiosity. I rarely say this, but I wish I could play it again for the 1st time to experience that pure joy and awe. 100 chum eggs out of 100.

A Beautiful Failure It is hard to recommend Sable, yet it is harder not to. The game resembles its protagonist in that it constantly tries to find its identity. Sable may fail in that endeavour, but it fails beautifully - which makes it worth playing in its own. The Pros [*] The overall aesthetic : Whether you enjoy Sable will mainly depend on whether you like its peculiar art style. The games visuals are clearly inspired by the works of franco-belgian comic artist Jean Giraud, better known as Moebius. They reminded me of his masterworks in all the best ways, especially since Sable's designers have created some beautiful vistas of their own within this style. [*] The story : Sable tells both a very personal story of a young girl choosing her future path in life and - at the same time - the story of her people, a civilization on a desert backwater planet, protected by a mysterious sentient force field called the Perpetual. As you explore the world, you gain a deeper understanding of its culture and history. There are enough answers to satisfy and enough open questions to still engage your imagination. [*] The soundtrack : Meditative sandgliding is one of the major appeals of this game and its music underlines this essential experience nicely. The Cons [*] Gameplay : I have not played Breath of the Wild. Supposedly it is both a masterpiece and the inspiration for Sable's gameplay, but something must have been lost in the imitation, because sable feels clunky and sometimes even repetitive. While exploring ancient ruins is rewarding most of the time, there are moments in which the game is simply frustrating - both the fishing minigame and bughunting come to mind - and I can't imagine players who would prefer to spend more time with these elements. [*] Technical issues : Speaking of bugs, there are many in this game, even now, three years after release. The interface sometimes becomes unresponsive, your bike won't heed your calls and there are stones and plants hanging in mid-air. While saving and restarting solves most of these issues, the process breaks immersion - and immersion is what Sable is ultimately about. Which is a problem. [*] The core premise : Sable is a young girl in a culture where one's role is determined by the mask you wear. The intention is to experience different lifestyles within your time with the game and choosing a mask for Sable in the end. The problem is that the activities to earn these masks rarely correspond with the lifestyle in question. Catch butterflies for a guard? One step closer to becoming a guard. Pay a cartographer? Here you are, on your way to becoming a cartographer yourself. Want to be a merchant? Just give some money to a merchant. Which... is part of the merchant lifestyle, I guess, but certainly not the whole of the thing. As for fishing and bug-handling - see above. I made a choice at the end, but it was a choice born from uncertainty. It was the end of the game and I felt cheated, because this choice could have been so much more. Final Verdict 5/10 Glider Parts - get it in a sale and enjoy its beauty for what it is, not what it could have been.

After finishing Sable, I felt sad because it ended. I want more! Sable is such a beautiful exploration game that drew me in from the moment I started. Its peaceful landscapes and calm atmosphere made it an incredibly relaxing experience. I found myself immersed in its world from start to finish. Exploring its vast world and uncovering its secrets was pure joy. My only issue with the game is The Chum Mask. This mask helps finding Chums but you receive it after finding 100 out of 165 Chums scattered across the map. By the time you get it, you've already discovered a large portion of the Chums without its help. It's not even that useful. It feels somewhat redundant to obtain the mask at this late stage in the game. It would be more beneficial to have it early in the game through a quest. I hope they make a sequel, and if they do, the collectibles are done better. Sable is an experience that I'll cherish for a long time!

If you really, really can't forgive a starting indie for performance issues and bugs, then don't bother, because this game is has those issues. Nothing game breaking, but I feel this needs to be said up front in an honest review of this game. That being said, this game is absolutely worth it, by a lot. Game design/mechanics-wise the game is LoZ:BotW without combat, fall damage, or drowning. It's an absolutely perfect "zone out, run around, explore" no stress game. Lore-wise, you're playing a young teen girl, a member of a nomad tribe on this weird, kinda post-apocalyptic planet in a culture made up of interwoven tribes, most tribes being a trade or profession, and all are a way of life. Each tribe has a mask that their members wear. Everyone wears masks, you never see anyone in the entire game not wearing one at any point, not even yourself. Anyway, the young girl's name is Sable, and she is being sent out, solo, without her tribe, on her journey of exploration, both of the world around her and herself, to decide what mask she will wear as an adult, and thus what tribe she will join. (I chose the nomad mask because I figured that after I 100%ed the game, my Sable missed her family and the people she grew up with, but you can pick literally any of the masks). You can beat the game really, really quickly if you want, picking the first mask you earn, but I highly suggest getting most of them, you end up learning more and more about the world, the culture, and the history with each one. The graphics are one of my favorite parts, the aggressive cell shading. But unfortunately, despite the simplicity of the graphics, the game performs far worse than it should. This game isn't for everyone, but the people that it is for will love it, as long as they can forgive a starting indie's first game having some issues. It's beautiful, heartwarming, and engrossing. If any of this sounds good to you, then highly, highly recommended.
