Definitely an upgrade to Ultimate. You really don't need Ultimate if you have this one, in my opinion, as it has a broader array of tools and more in depth sound modifications. Those who are unfamiliar with Rytmik will have to consider the unusual layout. But once you figure it out, you realize it's a lot of fun to work with. As with Ultimate, you can have four track "blocks" which can include up to four channels each, so potentially you could have 16 instruments playing at the same time, but keep in mind that the music will sound better if you focus on just a few instruments and spread them across channels to maximize their properties. There could be more instruments. A lot of them can be found in Ultimate, so they just copy/pasted them here. However, I have to admit the sound quality of those instruments is a little bit better with Studio. Some instruments kinda sound the same - a similar issue with Ultimate. However, you can modify them to great lengths in many different ways, way more than in Ultimate. For each instrument, I'd say you could potentially make a dozen different sounds just by stretching the limits of this DAW. Some are way more flexible than others and you can make way more different sounds out of them. The base instruments do sound a bit muffled from the get go, so you can only go to a certain level with them. You will have a hard time creating a crystalline sound with most instruments. Some are better than others - mainly, the chiptune, electronic ones. Real instruments ( winds, strings, etc. ) sound pretty bad when compared to other DAWs. At best, you can hope to make SNES or N64-ish songs with those. As with the other Rytmik software, your instruments come in basic forms and it's up to you to make them sound better, but that's pretty much normal for any DAW to a certain degree. Some buttons and other design choices have changed from Ultimate to Studio, but you should figure things out over time. You can import your own sound samples and add them to your Rytmik songs. Another major enhancement compared to Ultimate is the reverbs, delays, etc. which are way more powerful here. As for encoding, Rytmik once again will offer both MP3 and WAV format to the best quality it can possibly offer at 320kpbs. It seems like the Rytmik Cloud may not exist forever with the recent outages ( as I am typing this, I can't access the server ) keeping you from uploading your songs on their servers and you also can't listen to other people's songs, so make sure to save your songs locally because none of the songs you created will be there when you reinstall the software at a later date - it does not save any progress on the Steam Cloud. The software is seemingly abandonned, but to be fair it holds its own as it is now, minor some very rare bugs, especially on Linux due to compatibility issues, but you can still use it on Linux with Proton. I would disregard negative reviews only complaining about the lack of updates, if I were you. The software is alright, just has a few bugs ( sound farts maybe ). Adjust buffer size in the settings if you have sound issues with a lower end PC, maybe. I never encountered a major bug, like a bug that made me lose my progress or anything like that. It could benefit from some optimization but that's about it. Given that a developer posted recently on the Steam forum at the time I'm writing this, they're still around, but since it's been over 5 years ago that this software got an update, it's safe to say that they came to some kind of dead end with this software development-wise. Overall, if you enjoy making music for fun and not for monetary reasons, or if you are new and don't want to spend too much money, this is a great software to own, and it's now really cheap on a Steam sale too. If you are a pro or you want to be one, you may prefer to look at more expensive softwares.
If you've never made music before this is a really, really solid start to familiarize yourself with DAWs and using loops/modifications. From here you can jump off into a more professional setting, or just keep playing around. I hesitate to recommend it at full price but given yes over no I would say bite the bullet - again, only if you're new. This offers nothing to advanced or even intermediate DAW users.
