Very short puzzle solving game, story about a dysfunctional family with weird characters, it's ok if you got some time to kill, probably not fun if you are looking for some serious puzzles.

One of the best games from the Rusty Lake series. As always, wonderful graphics and a grim but subtle storytelling that unveil as you progress through some surreal puzzles, drawing you in more as you proceed through the game. Some puzzles are really confusing, perhaps, especially for the end game content, but it is indeed a great game.

The game doesn't disappoint. Excellent story that expands on this universe by giving us more background about this mystery. The puzzles have the right amount of difficulty, keeping you entertained and putting your brain to work without making it tedious. At the same time being extremely fun and hooking you in. Roots brings exactly that, the roots of this story. The beginnings. Even if the games are not all in chronological order, it makes it all part of the mystery and puzzle solving, having to piece the story together. The game does have cartoon like body horror at times so if that makes you uncomfortable, this may not be the series or game for you. If you can try, I would highly recommend at least trying one the games. Rusty Lake Roots was the first Rusty Lake game to make the shift away from cube puzzle escape rooms (RL: Hotel’s Cube Escape ‘roots’) to 2D puzzle rooms. Set between the late 1800s and early 1900s Roots is arguably better than Hotel and Paradise in many aspects such as a more comprehensive sense of lore. The game explores the memories of the descendants of the Vanderboom family through a family tree and reveals the creation of Mr Crow and the Shadow memory man. The game has 31 bite-sized levels with a few having larger game spaces but most only taking a while due to the challenge of some of the puzzles. While I enjoyed most of the puzzles and thought they were very good, (especially with foresight on the second playthrough when aiming to get all the achievements) I felt that there were several that were too confusing because the clues could be interpreted very differently from how the game wants you to interpret them. Overall though, the puzzles were about on par if not better than those from Hotel thanks to the unique and creative variety the Rusty Lake devs were able to come up with. The story the game manages to tell by exploring an entire family tree over several generations is actually quite interesting with arcs such as the Albert and Frank Rivalry. I also enjoyed the story Arc teaching me about the Vanderboom brothers plot for reincarnation and an infinite time loop. The music in the game on the other hand was solid, but still not as good as Hotel’s soundtrack. My only complaint was that the game didn’t have an option for fullscreen (On Mac at least). Roots’ Gothic Fiction setting is a highly enjoyable one to explore given its ambient soundtrack, engaging puzzles, and an enjoyable story, so make sure to check it out if that’s your thing.
