Don't let the low price of this game misguide you: Rum and Gun is a very decent ARPG with a lengthy campaign and lots of different enemies and bosses. Everything is in a pirate theme, including sea battles with huge pirate ships and lots of rum to refill your health. The fact that the entire game is made by a single developer is truly impressive! There are a few flaws though: there's a complex chart with upgrades to choose from when you level up, but you can only pick out of four randomly selected upgrades for some reason. Also, most of the upgrades improve existing stats instead of adding new skills or attack types. This makes the gameplay rather repetitive after a while, but it didn't prevent me to enjoy it a lot. Well done Borington!

I'm thoroughly impressed by how polished this is given this is an indie developer. Dialogues are fully voiced, combat is slightly janky but fun, and the story that knows you are actually here for the hack and slash ;) I ran into a game breaking bug in the latter part of the game where the UI is completely broken and I could not play anymore. I reported the bug to the developer in his discord and boy was he quick. He replied after half an hour or so saying it's a new one, and after another half an hour came back with a few lines of code to paste into the UI javascript file (since he could not immediately patch it due to Steam issues). I've never seen a dev (even indie ones) reply this fast!

A surprisingly well done ARPG and probably one of the most unique, at least in terms of setting and plot. How many other games do you know of where your goal is to prevent a pirate apocalypse? The game plays fairly well and while it's not hugely innovative, it is fun enough to last its run time. I have only two major complaints. One is that controlling the larger ships is fairly clunky and the ship-to-ship combat isn't great. It is fairly uncommon, so it's not huge problem, but still. Second, the game ends on a cliffhanger. For a game that was four years or so in the making, that's kinda galling. Still, for 5 bucks, this is a steal. If you like pirates, rum, and ARPGs, this is well worth your money. Pick it up.

You got rum and a gun... actually several guns, so what else you need from a pirate game? This feels like you stumbled upon your old favorite action figure from your childhood. It looks a bit worn off, but still has the fun and magic on it. The price will not break your bank and you can easily keep this super casual to get some nostalgic ARPG itch scratched when you need such distractions to your life. I have barely played through the intro and I'm really liking it! Can't wait to get back to playing!

Buying this feels like adopting a stray cat. Does it look a little rough? Yes. Does it have fleas? Yes. Is it still charming, lovable and full of personality? Absolutely.
