RPGMaker XP is a very robust and feature-rich game design engine with fantastic features that allow you to make many types of games once you figure out how to manipulate the engine. It has several advantages over other engines in its family, with one of the main advantages being a near-unlimited tileset size. I've had some projects with a tileset as tall as 10,000 pixels. I've seen other RPGMXP games with tilesets taller than that. It also offers three map layers out of the box, and has support for many types of music files, including OGG and MP3. In my opinion, the game's sprites and body part ratios are also aesthetically more appealing than the later versions of RPG Maker. That said, be aware that the graphics size does begin to show its age when viewed in modern, ultra-high resolution monitors. On a 2K monitor, the standard game window is rather tiny. Later versions of RPG Maker feature larger game windows that also scale up better. The smaller scale does make it less punishing to make graphics for this game, and it also forces you to be more creative with the pixels at your disposal. Event scripting is straightforward and easy to use, particularly if you are familiar with ElseIf logic flow. More complicated and expansive mechanics are made possible with the use of variables and switches (which again will require plenty of logic flow planning) The advantage to RPGMXP is that you don't even need to be versed in coding. However, for more advanced games, you'll need to learn the engine's language, which is RGSS. Here then is another disadvantage for RPG Maker XP, as the later versions of the program use Java scripting, which has more resources online. You can still work through RGSS and figure it out over time (again, as it's mostly just interpreting the logic of the scripts) but the scripting codes shared by users of RPGMXP grow older and older with each passing year, and some sites from the early 2000s are slowly shut down over time. Resources for RPG Maker XP continue to dwindle, so save anything you find as soon as you find them. Another shortcoming of RPGMXP is that it lacks some event and element options that are basic in later versions, such as binding skills to equipment (necessitating scripts to use such a function in XP, whereas it is a default option in later makers) as well as the use of percentages. (XP default options is the simple "strong against _ element" which cuts damage by half, with no other option.) Furthermore, RPG Maker XP's game compiler has a size limit (128MB). Anything bigger than that, and the exe file it produces won't export properly, necessitating the need for a fan-made compiler to allow you to distribute your "large" games. It's been 20 years since the program came out, and there hasn't been an official patch to address this issue. Speaking of limits, the game also has a maximum of 999 maps, which may pose a problem for very large/long game projects. All that said, RPG Maker XP remains a fantastic program for beginners and veterans alike, as its intuitive layout and mechanics are easy to pick up, and the program still offers plenty of customization for those willing to learn and code in RGSS. You still see plenty of new games coming out that use this engine, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anybody looking to tinker and make small games with it.

I haven't been able to turn it off. It's fun and addicting for anyone into make their own stories and maps. The scripting and coding of events is a challenge, but when it ends up working out, it's such a fun feeling like ''i did that'' and it's also something I can walk away from if I have to take care of something in the house. Right now a friend and I are making a Pokemon game with the Pokemon Essentials pack. Downloadable online. Anyways, back to it, hope this helped.

I owned this game years ago before it came to steam, and after 1000's of hours dumped into this wonderful tool, its is now a must have. It has stayed in my favorites for many years, and the more I use it the more I learn. I've created countess games and stories, and even learned to make my own pixel art. Using RPG Maker XP has been fun for my entire family, and my son now makes his own games. Its is very easy to use for beginners, and lots of fun to play with all the different options you can use. Out of all the other RPG Maker games this one is by far my favorite!
