RPG Maker VX Ace is a game engine that is basically suitable for just about everyone. It has support for scripts made with Ruby or referred to in the help guide as RGSS3, comes with 3 self-switches, tile size of 32x32, max resolution of 640x480, 999 maxmium amount of maps, and supports .OGG, .MP3, .WAV, and MIDI files as Audio. Let's look at the cons, shall we? - It doesn't support any other platform other than Microsoft Windows (x86/32-bit, 64-bit). Although there are emulators out there that can run RPG Maker VX Ace games, it will not run properly and you'll be running into errors. - Unlike RPG Maker 2000 and 2003, RPG Maker VX Ace only allows up to 999 maps. But nobody is going to make 999 maps, unless they're making a game that is really big. - RPG Maker VX Ace supports up to 3 layers. This can be really annoying as things can overlap and collisions can be really janky. - The programming language for RPG Maker VX Ace only supports Ruby, which can be a bit harder than RPG Maker MV's programming language, Javascript. This also means that RPG Maker VX Ace doesn't support HTML5 or little-to-none HTTP support. Despite most of it's flaws, I'm still giving this one a 9.5/10 as most of these you can get around with.

It's very easy to learn, although it is very confusing as soon as you first open it. If you are going to purchase this, do not read or watch the tutorials. You will get stuck, and it will make it much less fun than it should be. I learned it fully in less than 12 hours of just playing the games people made in it, and looking at the inner workings of what people made, or tinkering with it. Its one of the few games that truly make me happy, because I knew I was producing something worthwhile. And, when I got stuck, I just looked up the problem online to fix it. It's worth it, and can be used for games that aren't just RPGS.

Yes, I do recommend this program to other users, the simplicity of use makes it an amazing program to create videogames and RPGs, even if it looks too simple, it's very robust and allows for a lot more than expected.

I have enjoyed using this software to make a couple of games but now that I am older I am really starting to see how amazing this creator really can be. Your imagination is really the ONLY limitation.

RPG Maker VX Ace is a damn fine game engine. Not only is easy to use, but it looks and sounds good. Yes, custom content is totally possible to achieve, but I don't think it's a necessary counterweight to the already existing Run Time Package stock content in the game (unless you plan to distribute or sell a completely original IP). You got most things medieval; knights, dragons, magicians, orcs, etc. In contrast to MV (and likely MZ), who use some blended futuristic setting, I think this is much clearly the better choice. The sound and music is also quite pleasant when compared to MV (many of the new sound effects there are just obnoxious). The built in weapons, classes and etc in the database also gives plenty of references (unlike MV), which is nice. VX Ace does what the other engines did, whilst improving on the respective functions and all. MV kind of tried, and to it's credit, it did; "outperforming" the former VX Ace in technical aspects. However, that is all it was; a java scripting program besides anything else, and one that didn't really bother with fully realizing it's content, or the most commonly used audio formats either for that matter. It resulted in a rather rude and sloppy experience. RPG Maker VX Ace however feels just right in this regard: Not too modern nor greedy, but not too backwards of an engine either. It's got a solid foundation: good RTP content, easily accessable game code and many exploitable functions among other things. The only thing that it kinda lacks is a dark mode and some small quality of life fixes, like being able to control your ingame character with the mouse. But that is well worth the trade for an otherwise pitch perfect game engine. Besides, there probably exists plugins for each of those features too. I had super fun designing my first game in VX Ace, even with zero event scripting experience. Some might find similiar first time experiences in RPG Maker MV, and there's certainly nothing wrong with that. But the magic will wane, no matter how you look at it, if your game engine doesn't even support mp3 files. RPG Maker VX Ace reigns supreme in the end. Get it whenever it's on sale though; it's quite pricey!
