Don't normally write reviews but this one deserves some recognition. As someone who has 111% completion twice in Absolum, a similar genre of game with critical acclaim and success, I do think that this outshines it in a few ways. 1) Combat always stays engaging. Weapon mastery and enemy knowledge continue to stay relevant even into late game. Whereas in Absolum I felt that rituals/soul tree could quickly trivialize the game. Getting bored of a playstyle is easy by swapping into a new one. The difference between striker (Draven minigame all day), bow, and cannon are night and day and mastering each one feels great. 2) Meta progression. The base building aspect and farming of materials is great incentive to repeat runs and go through areas again. 3) Multiplayer. 4 friends is great chaos and I love that the currency is essentially sharable via donating in shops so you don't feel bad by doing well and trivializing the run for others. If someone is super rich they can buy things for other players that make sense for their build and everyone feels like they are contributing. In multiplayer in Absolum if one person is struggling then there's nothing the other person can do to help them out other than kill mobs faster. No game is perfect and since this is EA especially so, here are my gripes: 1) Dialogue in local coop is painful, giving gifts multiple times and spending minutes seeing the same text. 2) Defensive options visually are not clear, when is my "perfect dodge" window vs recovery window. I wish there was a tell or graphic that showed all parts of the defensive options when in process. Like glowing blue when I'm "intangible" for the spear pole vault or dodge etc. 3) Horizontal combat is great (X axis) but Y axis combat has little to no options other than knowing your weapons hit box. Some moves that swing up or down or diagonally would go a long ways to adding more complexity to weapon mastery. 4) Story is very uncompelling. But that's not the focus here so I can let it slide, but having a good story and cutscenes do a lot for others. 5) Faster time to start run, either a button/keyboard shortcut or spawning not on the opposite corner of the helicopter after you complete the game would be dope. Sometimes you just gotta farm a ton of stuff and think about all the time spent running across town. 6) More incentive to try other weapons. Love the current implementation, but just can't help but feel like I could be encouraged more to practice cannon or striker. I feel like the people who go out of their way to master all of the weapons will leave the game with a great impression vs those who only used hammer throughout the whole story. Maybe damage types and resistances? No actual idea here but just my vibes/feeling. Super excited to see where this goes and with the success of streets of rage 4 and Absolum in this genre I could see this being big if the same influencers playing those games got their hands on this when it is released.

I love it, is like playing Absolum, but easier, you can create and customize your character to your liking. You can have several weapons, mix and match gear with real stats and the art style is pretty good (similar to Absolum). Like Absolum as well, It's kind of a Beat em up genre mixed with Roguelite elements. The combat gameplay is awesome and enjoyable, even more with friends, light attack, heavy attack, combos. The progression is also great, you can maintain your gear after every run and progress further your flasks and weapons after completing every "mission". It's pretty good, it has that one mechanic I wished every Roguelike I played before could have, a better progression than "you just lost everything in every run and just get to maintain passives only". Here you keep everything, even the weapons you get along the way. Approved!

I bought this game a long time ago and burned through what was the content at the time. I didn't 100% it, I didn't get all of the mini goals/weapon unlocks and I didn't get every armor and weapon, but what I did do was fight all of the bosses and grind some gear that I thought fit my playstyle. Today was the first time I've played since the most recent (August) update, and I must say all of the changes from when I quit to what's out now seems really nice. People complaining about lack of updates should have waited for the full release, or need to play some other games in the mean time. I've played games where there's been ZERO updates, games that have completely died, and games like Grounded (One and Two) and I must say it is really nice to play through a game and leave to come back to a BUNCH of new stuff and reasons to play through the old stuff. One great thing about this game is the couch co-op shared screen and the fact that you play as a team and one ONE person needs to be good is HUGE for someone like me who has kids. Sackboy with limited lives means by the time I die ONCE we're restarting the level, but this game really lets me carry my kids through. Honestly as it is it's great. I'll be burning through this at some point once we finally finish sackboy. I've already gotten the 4 year old excited and armed with a spear. Sky is the limit! Let them cook!

Awesome. Another case of reviews selling this game short, glad I took the chance while it was on sale. Fantastic action RPG roguelike. The animation is buttery smooth, expressive, and charming, in classic Klei style. The gameplay is smooth as well, and hits and combos feel satisfying. The local co-op is solid, despite the janky progression. The roguelite progression is decent so far, but I have a feeling it's about to open up a lot more once I progress this next quest. Just felt the need to throw my hat into the ring, as the reviews did NOT do this game justice. It's fantastic. If you're looking for a solid local co-op game, this is one of them. No regrets here.

Great game for couch coop with the family. One player can carry all the others. Skill floor is low enough that smaller children can play, but the ceiling is pretty high so it is engaging for parents. Its combo system feels a lot like a simpler Brawlhalla built for the Beat 'em Up genre. For couch coop, the game play loop is very satisfying, but I can see how this game could get stale if played regularly. Its weapons don't quite have the combo variety to scratch that Brawlhalla itch and its on-screen enemy count is just low enough that it is difficult to consistently chain long hit streaks. As a result, half of the rooms in each adventure end up being a bit boring for adults. But again, if you are just trying to successfully carry some six-year-olds through a game, that is not entirely a bad thing. I will say that the focus hit system is a creative addition to the genre and it is quite satisfying to chase; I found myself actually wanting move speed bonuses because of how important positioning is to consistently deal double damage. All of my controllers worked fine. When a controller disconnected, the game paused to allow reconnecting. When the game bugged out, there was a button in the menu that allowed us to reset the current room. I never felt any frustration getting into a game or staying in a game, which is important for dealing with smaller children. My kids are five and six and enjoyed the basic game play loop, but are too young to really engage with the talent tree, focus hit system, or any of the other mechanics. A key frustration point is selecting new talents at the end of every other room because the adults want to choose carefully, but the children cannot participate beyond randomly grabbing one and feel left out. As a additional result, children end up quite under-powered by the end of the run and this can also be quite frustrating for them. But despite these problems, the overall game play loop and cute art seems to be more than enough to keep my kids engaged and wanting to play more. I would strongly recommend this game if your use case is similar to mine.
