If you like officer play, this is not the game for you. This is more in the vein of RTK 9 and 11. (I think 9 was the one where you controlled the rulers with castles all over the map... it has been a long time.) You of course will need the DLC to make full use of the game, Koei Tecmo being Koei Tecmo, however it is a solid game overall. The turns are broken down into 10 days per cycle which I think was a bit of a mistake. They should have followed the awakening bit where you can manually pause after tasks are done and went for more of a real time system in this one. If they had done that, I think this would have been viewed as one of the better RTKs they made. The pause every 10 days kind of takes away from that and makes the game seem very slow especially when you can have battles raging all across the map. The supply line system is a new addition and I am not sure if they will keep it going forward, but I think that including things like logistics is very important in any war. How easy it is to cut off can potentially be an issue but I do understand the logic and rationale behind it. Also having generals with both good and bad traits makes for interesting game play. For instance, in my play I had Yu Jin and Xiahou Yuan move to cut off Yuan Shao's forces. Due to the personality of Xiahou Yuan he just ran right into the forces and engaged when they got too close due to personality, where Yu Jin carried out orders and saved the rather suicidal general. Buildings also play a major impact. An arrow tower with walls in the right spot can really hurt enemy forces and give you enough time to come to the rescue of your territory and destroy what is left of the enemy, as well as building morale boosting buildings and camps near big cities you are going to attack. If you like ruler play this is a good title that could have been great if they had went real time instead of the 10 day per turn cycle. There are just too many pauses and imagine battles playing out with you only pausing to give new commands or to make changes. You could keep the limits of actions, but again take a play from the Nobunaga Awakening playbook in how you handle the month to month transitions... just not all the way as that game has its own issues. Overall not a bad RTK title. Is it worth full price? Probably not. On sale it might be a gem to pick up because due to it being ruler only, the usual people are going to snowball in the main scenarios. I have yet to try Liu Bei in the Guan Du scenario to see if it is possible to not only survive but to win as him, as he has two cities and sandwiched between three super powers, but it might be doable by someone with the skills and planning. It's just a shame that Koei Tecmo always comes < > close to making a great game only to give up on it... or go make a disaster that is RTK 8 and then release patches that do not even fix what the main issue is. (AKA the AI never attacks each other at a certain point.) This and 13 have the opposite issue. The AI can and will attack you. You can also really be punished hard if you launch an attack and do not plan it through, I once suffered a defeat as a snowballing Cao Cao because I attacked a city and did not bother securing the supply lines, only to have my armies wiped out and to be hit pretty hard. Did not cause a game over, but it was more than enough to put me on the edge of my seat for a while. Maybe one day they will get the formula down for the ruler based games. I really think they should look into making them real time with manual pauses to address civil issues, as in to do city stuff every month etc, then watching as battles unfold rather than seeing it start, pause, issue more commands, pause, and you be waiting for the results 5 turns later. Missed opportunity there.

Finally got this during the KOEI sale, was surprised how much I enjoyed it after seeing the mixed reviews. It may just be my favorite ROTK ever as someone who's previous favorites are IX and XI. Pros: -Grid system means every piece of land is important -Combat is addictive, I personally love giving orders and watching it play out (not for everyone I understand) -Domestics is simple, but still has depth if you want to min max -Ability to randomize force placement, increasing re-playability -Administration system is a cool new addition that allows new strategy adjustments mid-game Mixed: -Tactics not having enough explanation, not sure which are the strongest or how much damage they will do -Overall slow pace of the game is a turn-off at first, but I feel this is just part of the game -Honestly, this is the strongest AI I have seen in an ROTK game, but they have major issues when it comes to attacking and defending gates. - Bad: -Duels are extremely unbalanced, rarely do you see a duel where the War between officers is even. You can't decline duels or outright avoid them like how you could by placing an officer in the back of the formation in IX. Luckily you can turn off duels which I highly recommend, it just makes the overall playing experience more enjoyable. -Some translations in English seem not clear or broken, I had to figure out for myself what it meant just through playing the game what some of the text meant Overall, if you're a fan of past ruler based ROTK gameplay this one is a must if you haven't given this one a shot.

A phenomenal strategy game that more than lives up to the rich legacy of Koei's series of grand strategy wargames. ROTKXIV demands a significant amount of management skills (both on the macro and micro level) and thus may not be best suited for newcomers to the genre. However, once the player is able to grasp a hold of its many complex systems, it can provide one of the most satisfying and addicting strategic gameplay in the market.

I love this game, but its almost nothing like I expected. Compared to its predecessors, it is much simpler and streamlined and feels much more like playing a physical board game with narrative vignettes than a 4k war strategy game. Instead of splitting into the dichotomy of kingdom building and war strategy, RTK14 splits the difference. There are no tactical battles. The big map is the tactical map. There is no build up and then strike, you are constantly at war and constantly defending yourself. The pace is much faster than any other Koei strategy title I've messed with, at the expense of complexity. But warning, this game is unforgivably difficult and does very little to prepare for it. I found the tutorial totally adequate the get playing, but after that its a quick road to destruction until you have figured out what to do.

I kinda like this better than ROTK XI. The biggest difference that is fun for me is the buff stacking concept. For example you use officer that can create a Ring formation and has "Defense" trait. Then bring another officer with "Steel General" to accompany him and make a camp. That single officer can reach 2000-2600 defense and will only take 1 damage per tick making him unbeatable even with low counter damage. ROTK XI is more a strong individual unit with 3 officers skill combined, while in XIV you need to create a party that can buff each other and benefits from it which I think is very cool once you get familiar with the traits, skills and mechanism.
