A classic roguelike, worth a play for historical reasons. Rogue Legacy 2 really does blow it out of the water, but I go back to play it from time to time for the happy memories.

I've played roughly 50 hours of Rogue Legacy for each of two stretches. The reason: there are really two games in one here, and you have to get past the difficulty wall of Game 1 to get to the real fun of Game 2. Here are the basic mechanics: you soldier into a grimdark castle as a knight with a choice of a randomly generated and unusual trait (for example, you're color blind or you're super small). You get as far as you can into randomly generated dungeons (with reoccurring enemies and high-level area environments) until you die, and then you're given the chance to do the whole thing again as New Knight with another random trait. OR You do everything I noted above except you DON'T die. Instead, you play it safe, collect as much gold as you can, then boogey back to the castle entrance to unload all of that cash into better weapons and stats. So, you know, a pretty standard roguelike setup. The difference that made me quit initially after 50 hours, and then pick it back up again years later to run another 50 hours, is that your exploration will get you to a set of four bosses who are, let's call it, "punishing". You're going to hit some walls here quickly. And since there's so much to do and explore outside of those fights, you might find yourself racking up time exploring all four main areas first. This is Game 1: drilling down through the first tier of the dungeons until you have to meet and defeat the bosses. After that, though, it's not New Game+ business as usual with upgraded enemy stats and the same basic structure. No, after Game 1, there is a host of new and even more punishing bosses that get unlocked, and which require doing as much with all of that gold and those skills as you can. Which is to say, if you're even casually interested, you're going to have at least 15-20 hours of a great time in Game 1, and if you want to push forward, you've got all of Game 2 to look forward to as well!

This is a difficult rogue 2D platformer. The conceit is that you are traveling through a castle, which is kind of a metroidvania-like map, getting treasure and abilities and fighting monsters. If you die, you get a choice of a new character who might be stronger, might get more money (which lets you upgrade), or might make you move backwards. It's a hard game and can be frustrating at times.

I don't even know how to describe this game. Like obviously its a rogue-lite and all but that doesn't explain why this game is so fun. Having random chance influence core mechanics is a ballsy and frankly risky move in a game. Because oftentimes it's frustrating when it feels like you died due to being unlucky instead of a lack of experience, since in those cases you feel like there was nothing you could do to improve so you're at the whims of the game which just sucks. I would consider myself to be one of those people but Rogue legacy does a great job in remedying this, both for the classes and for the traits. For the classes having 3 options still typically gives you enough agency for avoiding the class you really don't want to play and also lets you try out different strategies against the bosses without much complaint. At one point I was going a Lich king build with the ravens putting all my money into magic power and enjoyed decimating rooms whenever I wanted. But that didn't work against Ponce de Leon do I had to adjust. As for the traits, perhaps the sole of the game lies in these. Many of the traits are benign, many of the traits are funny, some of the traits are beneficial, and few of them are detrimental. Like with the classes, if there's a trait you really don't want to encounter again you should be able to avoid it fairly easily with the 3 options. And then if you ever really want to practice against bosses with different combinations or try to get the chests that you couldn't reach in a previous run, the tinker makes it all work out so it doesn't feel tedious because you have enough control to still have good progress. I'd say its worth the 15$ if you enjoy Rogue-like games. It almost certainly won't be like other games you've played before, but I think it will be so in a positive way. Now if only you could make it that Charon doesn't steal a (minimum) of 50% of your gold.

This is a good game. I enjoyed playing it years ago, and I enjoyed replaying it till I decided to 100% it. Harder bosses were quite a challenge, but they're doable. Collecting everything is just doing a couple of runs, aiming to find good chests. Easy enough. But beating the game without an architect dying 15 times or less... I can't stand it. All because of the main gimmick of the game, which is a random selection of characters with positive and negative traits. At first, it was a fun and unique feature, but when you attempt something as challenging as Tanatophobia achievement, it just becomes really annoying RNG involvement in your run. You have 4 classes unlocked from the start, and only one of them, Knight/Paladin, is somewhat good for me; the other ones are either risky, which means dying from two hits, which is not avoidable if you have not perfectly mastered positioning yourself on the screen, or tanky, but with absurdly low damage, which means super long boss battles and clearing levels. It's totally not worth it. However, it's easy to unlock the really good 5th-class, best damage dealer in the game, Shinobi, so the problem resolved? No, because it's up to RNG to decide whether you even see this class in the character selector and pray to god to not see one with a negative trait like Vertigo, making the game upside down, or Gigantism plus Endomorph or other crap. I would like an option to disable traits if you already beat a game, positive and negative ones; it's just ruining it for me. But as I said, this is a good game, especially in your initial runs when you don't know anything. Very neat roguelike.
