Review after watching credits roll! This is a game I played off and on for years and just started taking it seriously a few weeks ago. TLDR, when I think of a roguelite game this is the classic definition. You always start the castle from the beginning, you upgrade all of your skills between runs, and the bosses stay dead until the castle is clear. Its a simple formula, but I like it. Yeah, but why would YOU like it in 2025? Frankly the game is charming. The developers were clearly having a good time. The "Legacy" aspect of this game is that each time you die in the castle, your character is actually dead. You have to pick an heir to take up your quest. All heirs are not created equal. While one run may have an amazing Ronin with a katana, the next run may be a colorblind bard with IBS. That has gameplay impacts, you won't see colors and you'll fart a lot. It helps keep things interesting. Otherwise the game is responsive and fun to play. Works great on the steamdeck if you are on the go. So yeah in conclusion, its simple, fast, and fun to play. Its a great palette cleanser between bigger games.

I have played a lot of Roguelikes, and I think Rogue Legacy 2 is genuinely my favorite of them all. Maybe not the best of them; There's pretty limited build variety beyond class and weapon choice, the end game is pretty lack-luster, run variety isn't that wild either. But. It is stuffed to the brim in charm and heart and humor. It feels like home in that sense. I can just pick the game up and play and never have a bad time. The gameplay is so smooth it puts most pure metroidvanias to shame. The classes are ALL fun. All of them. All bangers. The soundtrack is fantastic. The artstyle is cute and charming while also maintaining its own identity. There could definitely be more modifiers and more classes and more zones and more bosses, but I think that's the best flaw a game can have, no? To just want *more* of it. 10/10. Maybe not the perfect roguevania, but for my money its my favorite.

Didn't play the first one, but after playing this one I will have to go check it out as it was better than I was expecting. Very high replay value, good story, and enough RNG to keep it interesting.

I would describe the game as a metroidvania first, with some roguelite elements. The game has a lot of permanent progression and upgrades. Bossfights aren't randomized and are only defeated once, staying dead after subsequent runs. You also unlock many ways to mitigate the "randomness" associated with roguelikes, being able to lock the dungeon to not procedurally generate anew after dying for example. The game is as "lite" as it gets in terms of being a roguelike. This doesn't make it a bad game, it's just something you should know so you don't go into it with the wrong expectations. The gameplay is absolutely fantastic. Combat and platforming and the fusion of the two through the spin kick mechanic is extremely satisfying. A lot of that satisfaction also comes from the sound design.

Excellent game, featuring a rather interesting heir system, where your consecutive tries at conquering the castle are followed by additional quirky traits (which are mostly harmless and are intriguing, most of the time) and diverse pool of classes, weapons, talents and spells. I really liked the games' style and settings, although it is rather simple. I have listened to music on my initial tries, but later on muted it so I could listen to podcasts and the likes, since the game can be kind of played on "auto-pilot". Game progressions requires you to complete the whole game multiple times, and to reach a true ending you need to do it around 7-8 times. There is an option to skip all these tries after the first completion, and you will just have to complete the game at high-difficulty without having learnt boss patterns, mechanics and foes' behavior. I personally find no problems with such progression, although it leaves me stifled that theoretically, the character progression (where you improve you characters' stats) will take you more than hundreds of hours, although it is not necessary, since I have completed the game within 100 hours without having turned on Home Rules. Speaking of Home Rules, those are settings which can allow you to change your enemies' health, damage dealt and how many artifacts and upgrades you can have per run. A handy mechanic, sure, for those who struggle or may flame on the game and just make it easier to complete certain steps. Overall, the game has been a blast and a very entertaining experience, with each run being different and unique. The only thing that can dampen your enthusiasm is achievement hunting, which would require you to complete additional game modes or look into other sources to see how they are done (I'm looking at you, Full House).
