After 800 hours and completing all achievements for this game, I feel like it's time to write this. You will hate this game, and then come to love it, and then hate it again, and then go back to loving it. You will go through every single emotion, every stage of grief, the highest of highs and lowest of lows playing this game, struggling at this game, and trying to improve at this game until it etches itself into you like the microplastics in your blood stream. And once it gets it grip on you, it won't let go. You're gonna keep coming back to this game. It won't matter why. Maybe you meshed well with similar games that allow for different play styles. Maybe you're too stubborn to let the game knock you down after losing, maybe it's because games have gotten too stale and that this is your last reliable source of pure, no nonsense gameplay. Even when you think you're done, you're not. Maybe there's a new update and you wanna take a gamble at how broken it is. Maybe one of your friends suggest you two play a run together like two crabs in a giant bucket. Maybe a mod releases that just let's you PLAY AS A TANK. I keep coming back to this game, more so than any other game I've played in my entire existence. Very rarely can a game like this feel as fresh on run 1 as it would on run 1000. I'm writing this after completing a monsoon Artificer run when most of my runs have been on rainstorm. That run in particular felt like one of the hardest challenges I've ever had to do, and vastly different from any of my autopilot huntress runs. I hate this game, and I love this game. I hate how this game has consumed me since I first game it an honest attempt at 4 years ago, yet I love how games like this can just exist. It's a game that will ruin slower paced games for you. It's a game with the potential of forming the strongest of bonds with other people. It's a game that will teach you how to get good at games. It's a game with a soundtrack made by someone who thinks he's the shit and has the evidence to back that up. It's a game that goes on sale for $8 that I put 800 hours in without even touching eclipse and having barely dipped my toes into modding. It's a game. Not a sad imitation of a movie Not a glorified storefront or slot machine (although gambling is still present) It's just pure, unrestricted fun

How to destroy a player base in 5 steps: 1. Big company buys game 2. Release DLC out of nowhere that is buggy as hell 2.5 Un-Ironically make the DLC about taking the player's money 3. Force an update that breaks the game 4. Do not allow a way to revert updates 5. Suck off the CEO and say it was a great idea

I believe that the core of what makes a rogue-lite addicting is the power fantasy. When the RNG hits just right during a run, you become a God... and becoming a God is fun! Risk of Rain 2 understands this concept so incredibly well. In other rogue-lites, a good run means you feel powerful. In this game, you have the capability of becoming so insanely overpowered that you can barely even comprehend what is happening. Hundreds of enemies will spawn only to be instantly killed with a casual glance in their direction, exploding in a fountain of coins. On your tenth loop, you become essentially omnipotent - flying around the map at mach speed, thoughtlessly burning everything in your path as you stack another teddy bear on top of the pile and put on your 10th pair of red-tinted glasses. Until finally, like Ozymandias, your empire collapses in an instant when you greedily stop to scratch your nose, atomized into a million pieces by a random flaming jellyfish. In RoR2, chasing that power fantasy dragon is so addictive on its own, but this game also happens to have the added benefit of featuring extremely engaging combat, interesting enemies, intense boss battles, awesome level design, a ton of fun items, a diverse cast of playable characters, multiplayer, challenge modes, and to top it all off... what I would consider the greatest video game soundtrack of all time. The music is just so incredible that I can't really put it into words. Risk of Rain 2 is hands down my favorite rogue-lite, and one of my favorite games ever.
