It takes some getting used to, Piranha Bytes walked away from the 'tried-and-true' gothic formula for this one, but it's generally an enjoyable game, and extremely comedic: the castaway is extremely fed up with other people's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and it shows. I recommend this game, if you can stomach all the pirate stuff. As the game's setting moves away from the rugged and bleak fantasy designs of Gothic and into a Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest love-letter.

Beat it in 33 hours and enjoyed it a lot because I also loved the Gothic series. It feels like a Gothic 2 full conversion mod with pirate theme and guns. The guns also gave me Fable vibes while I'm exporing and looting caves in the jungle. Lots more good to say, would recommend to any Gothic fans.

Although I did not enjoy Risen I, as I thought it was redundant, buggy, and overall did not seem fully finished, I still believed it had some potential. The second part of the series only strengthened my belief, as it brought the best possible outcome. Firstly, I want to express my appreciation for how developers transformed their game into a completely renewed version, which transported us into a pirate story instead of a medieval fantasy one. I won’t be alone if I say that we don’t have many games based on a pirate story, so I need to give credit where it's due. Secondly, while some aspects of the game remain the same from the previous game, the worst ones stayed behind, leaving us with a good lore, interesting mechanics, and unique enemy choices. Not to mention the NPCs you encounter throughout the game, who are likable and funny. Lastly, as soon as you equip your first musket, you will feel all your problems leave your body. I highly recommend playing this game.

The first Risen game was a pleasant surprise for me. It was a very well made, small, but focused, RPG. I was a little bit worried about Risen 2: Dark Waters, because it wasn't well received by the public when it was released in 2012. Now let's see what kind **** it actually is. The game looks good, for the most part. Vegetation is plentiful, polygon count is a little higher than in the first game, and some of the effects, like the sunrays, look impressive. Combat is very similar to the first game, although tailored to the pirate theme, focusing on sabers, epees and firearms, instead of axes, swords and shields, but it does the job quite well. The story is written well enough, and characters are interesting, though the pirate setting is quite a departure from the first game. Quest variety and relative shortness of the game ensures that the game never really becomes boring. For all of those who finished the first game, it's unfortunate that the story in the second Risen isn't sufficiently connected to the first. Sure, the protagonist is the same, but even that isn't obvious initially. In fact, the first few hours of the game are not very fun. For whatever reason, the first island is inhabited by some of the deadliest enemies, such as jaguars, and natives, and there are a few nasty invisible traps, hidden in the jungle. That makes the beginning of the game frustrating, and I'm sure many people gave up and quit at that point. That is a shame, because the rest of the game is a focused, and well made experience. Risen 2: Dark Waters did not disappoint me, though the beginning of the game should have really been better.
