May not be the best Piranha Bytes game, but it is a Piranha Bytes game nonetheless - very enjoyable niche game that scratches the itch no other company or RPG game can address to this day.

Risen 2 Dark Waters Review Review is after completing the main story, all available side quests and obtaining all of the artifacts. Also played Risen 1 previously to completion. Pros: [*]Interesting story about vanquishing another titan. [*]Some fun side quests on each of the islands. [*]The pirate theme adds to the game, making it different from the first game. [*]Good plot twist in one of the islands in the main quest. [*]Some unique weapons. [*]Some hidden artifacts that add bonuses [*]Final battle was easy and fun. Was able to go all out on the baddie. Good fun. [*]Console activation and easily used cheat codes that make this game bearable and enjoyable. Cons: [*]No mini map. Convoluted navigation. [*]Somehow our hero from Risen 1 has completely forgotten all skills. [*]Unclear objectives locations. [*]Very interesting loot, most of the time. [*]Sprint is time based, not action based. Start sprinting, stop, stand still and watch as your guy pants heavily as if he had run a mile. [*]All ships look the same. [*]Too much backtracking for side quests. [*]Enemy faces are repeated throughout the entire game. [*]Had to redo the fight before the final fight due to a game crash during a cutscene. [*]After the final cutscene, the game ends. There is no free roam afterwards. [*]Voodoo is not that impressive. I found muskets to be the better option. [*]Vegetation increases when walking towards it. Advice: [*]Cheat! This game is an absolutely unbearable slog without cheat codes. [*]Add large amounts of gold and glory to your character. Enjoy the rest of the game fully. It's a much more enjoyable experience. You need some grog! Overall Score: 6/10 with cheats 4/10 without cheats

A good sequel to Risen 1 that you'll likely enjoy even if you haven't pleyed the first. Kinda like the first one, the first 3/4 of the game is what I enjoyed the most thanks to exploration and the immersive environment. I have to say that level design is a bit of a step back: Risen 1 was set ona single island that had interesting level design, it was compact but vertical; Risen 2 has multiple smaller location, I therefore expected them to have more depth, but that is not the case, exploring is still very enjoyable but for a different reason: progression. Like basically every Pyranha Bytes games, a good progression system is one of the pillars of the experience (together with an immersive setting and the intrinsic motivation to explore it). Progression is good for to main reasons: a balanced economy and the player always needing more power. Progression is also the main drive for exploration: as you always need more EXP and money, killing mobs and finding treasures is always rewarding, but this is a double edged sword, because once you become strong enough, towards the end of the game, exploring becomes less interesting and more dull. Combat is weird, it has less depth compared to Risen 1, this makes it a bit obnoxious at first, but it's simplicity makes slashing through enemies a bit more enjoyable compared to Risen 1 after you get some power. Story is more of an overall goal to the game, both the story and characters are not very deep but, like for Risen 1, I wouldn't call it bad, it's just not part of the core experience. The last bit definitely feels rushed tho: an underwhelming final boss with followed by a quick conclusion, I kinda wish they made a preper final boss and endgame dungeon instead of making Maracai Bay, which is where exploring and questing felt the most dull to me.

Played for the first time in 2024, right after finishing Risen 1. Took me 27 hours. It's a good Piranha Bytes game, don't be scared of some negative reviews and give it a go! Pros: -Fast travel points and sprinting -Multiple islands to explore, content feels concise (not too much, not too little) -Many treasures to uncover -Legendary items that passively increase your skills -Very nice pirate setting, feels like an alternative universe -Nice plot and fun dialogues Cons: -No swimming... In a game about pirates? Deep water just teleports you back -Musket gameplay gets a bit tedious in the end -You reach peak of your strength quite fast -Guns do funny things to the ragdoll (YEET) -Some english translations are horrible (shotgun = musket), and one quest is affected (choosing the right chest) -A few story points that do not make sense
