This review is positive only because I'm evaluating the remaster itself. It's a very good remaster of a very mediocre game. Mediocre at best: [*]Low weapon variety. 3 infinite ammo weapons, out of which you will logically use only the strongest one. Several different types of rocket launchers, which are fun, but only one can be carried at a time and all have very limited ammo pools. [*]Low enemy variety. Nearly all of them are hitscanners who look similar to each other: dudes in military uniforms. They're also fairly tanky for no reason, especially Monks and Enforcers. [*]Combine the above and you are forced to use the infinite MP40 to slowly grind down enemies with inflated HP pools. Imagine that some people play on higher difficulties with even more foes whom are even tankier. I guess hearing the Enforcer pain sound for 30 seconds each time you kill one is entertaining for them. [*]The traps are the other half of the opposition. Annoying, slowing the game down even further. [*]Powerdowns, i.e. powerups with negative effects, which you should wait out. Guess what this does? [*]Mazes all around. [*]For Extreme Rise of the Triad multiply all of the above by around 100. Just watch videos on YouTube about how it was deliberately designed to be absolutely bullsh*t. There is a reason why there's an achievement to finish only ONE, ANY EROTT level. There is some good in RoTT: [*]When it's allowed, it can be really fast. With a Firewall weapon to instantly kill enemies and few traps it can be as fast as lightning. [*]Dog Mode and God Mode powerups are very fun to use. [*]Soundtrack is absolutely fire. Some of the best of that era. It was constantly reused in user content (most prominently Doom and DN3D) from the '90s and early '00s. The remaster has multiple quality of life changes, e.g. less self damage on explosive firearms, and an option to halve Monk health. Why not Enforcers as well? No idea. To be sufficiently entertained, play on Medium at most. Do not even attempt finding all secrets and killing all enemies. You will lose your mind in most levels, they are that maze-like. Just focus on finishing them. Also, play an hour a day tops.

If Doom and Duke Nukem 3D are boomer shooters, then Rise of the Triad is a silent gen shooter. This game actually started life as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D (and runs on a highly modified version of its engine), and the signs are all over the place - big, abstract, and labyrinthian levels that bear no resemblance to real-world locations, a low number of weapon slots (although the third slot has a variety of options available), pushwalls galore, and a selection of enemies that are supposed to be cultists but bear an uncanny resemblance to Nazis. Unfortunately for Apogee, id Software pulled the plug on the game before releasing Doom and taking the world by storm, requiring the team to completely retool the game as its own thing. By the time the game even released, Doom 2 was already out, leaving poor ROTT to be mostly ignored. However, this is a great game that has a lot to offer if you enjoyed Wolf 3D and want a way more advanced version of it. Instead of monotonous gray hallways, levels are alive with lots of moving tricks and traps, atmospheric skyboxes and lightning storms, and jump pads and moving walkways to add some vertical gameplay to the mix. There's even powerups like dog mode and god mode that are a lot of fun to play with. Although levels can be quite maze-like, the easily-accessible overhead map does a mostly good job of keeping you from getting lost. There's a TON of content here relative to other 90s shooters; 116 levels across the shareware episode, the original game (Dark War), the new episode for this release, and Extreme Rise of the Triad. That's not including the Doom mod bundled with this release called Return of the Triad, which features another 12 levels. I have not played EROTT or Return yet since the rest of the game took long enough to warrant a break, but rest assured you will get your money's worth here. Of course this all goes without saying that Nightdive did a fantastic job with this port. This is the definitive way to play the game and beats the hell out of launching DOSBox. There's tons of customization including which version of the fantastic OST you'd like and which HUD setting you prefer (which includes some all-new options that more closely resemble Doom). I highly recommend giving ROTT a try - just keep in mind the context of the game when it came out and what sort of experience you'll be getting, and you'll find an oddly addicting and satisfying game.

As classic as it gets for old school cool DOS shooters. The remaster includes all the updates you'd expect from Night Dive Studios in one solid package. Progressing through levels can be very maze like and downright impossible if specific hidden switches can't be found. It's worth a playthrough if you like boomer shooters but keep a guide handy because on your first playthrough you will get stuck.

Its a Rise Of The Triad remaster but Nightdive put 200% effort into it like undummied out enemy sprites, a whole new expansion pack episode for free, a free level editor, workshop support, 4 different versions of the soundtrack including Andrew Hulshult's 2013 remake thrash metal OST. Its got the shareware demo episode and the Extreme ROTT expansion for those can't live without a dick in their eye and the dick has "Kaizo" written on it. Extreme ROTT was a Kaizo hack before Kaizo Mario was ever a thing. It is still ROTT at its core with all the flaws of the old but the fact this much effort was put into it is very telling. And you're not really buying this for the gameplay or the story, you're buying this because ROTT's soundtrack is fucking fantastic.
