Rise of the Third Power is a very impressive SNES-era style JRPG to be made by such a small team. The character portraits look amateur, but the rest of the game is very much not. Excellent pixel work, excellent music, a surprisingly good story, solid side quests, rewarding skill advancement, and very solid game mechanics. Each of the eight playable characters has a unique skillset and none of them have a generic fight command, so you have to think through a variety of actions. There's also a minor exhaustion system that encourages you to switch up your character usage throughout, which is a novel approach. It's also a good length at about thirty hours. Very highly recommended.

Overall a decent RPG. Would recommend buying it on sale as I do not feel like it is a $20 game, I put in just under 27 hours of game time to get every achievement with the exception of beating the game on expert difficulty. The only real con in my opinion as that I do not feel like the ending is complete. It is hard to explain that without going in to too much detail as a lot of games have open endings so the best way I can put it is that the conflict does not ultimately get solved. So you're expecting more to the game and all the sudden the credits roll which is just confusing and unfulfilling. Again what is there is enjoyable and I will recommend this game but I would purchase it on a steam sale and with the knowledge that you may find yourself questioning the ending.

I got Rise of the Third Power because I loved Ara Fell. Wish Steam had a numbered rating system instead of just yeas or no. I'd give this game a 7/10. The music, pixel art and battle system are great. Loved mixing up the characters and using the different skills. My main beef is with some of the side quests, particularly Aden's Childhood and The Rezkovs were annoyingly short and unsatisfying. Made me wonder why they were even included. Also the character art for the dialog windows are really awkward looking. Seems like everyone has the same bent over body template. Kinda worked for then men, but everyone with breasts looked extremely off....Wish they'd just used pixel art. Anyway the game is still fun, if you like old school JRPG's you'll probably like Rise of the Third Power.

One of the best indie JRPGs out there. Great plot, top-notch writing, and amazing characterization. Huge overworld but respects your time and does not feel unnecessarily lengthened. Looking forward to the sequel!!

This is one of those games one starts, and can't stop doing until the end. Because there is SUCH GREAT STORY TELLING. So much better than in most real Japanese JRPG s – Soul Hackers 2, Trails of Cold Steel IV, I'm looking at you. Because those mentioned JRPGs have huge impressive 3D graphics and videos all over it but have not much of a story to tell. Soul Hackers 2 has totally flat characters; ToCS IV dragged the promising story line of its predecessors into a lengthy boring mess. The Rise of the Third Power however has only 2D Graphics, not much more than what was standard back when the SNES ruled the JRPG world (think Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Terranigma). But holy moly, that story. Those characters. It was SUCH A JOY to play through. Sure, if you read receptions of others some will complain about the (classical turn based) fight system (my opinion: it's totally ok, it even has depth), or the uplevel system (my stand: I loved it!) - I've seen both handled much more bad in Japanese JRPGs. Yes, sure, it could be a bit more complex - but that is NOT what I'm interested in when playing a JRPG. I want a good gripping story, with great characters, and yes (!), Rise of the Third Power just delivers. Did I cry during playing? Yes. Not only once. And often out of happiness. When your characters have made it through some massive shit, and then there is some kind of a great rewarding situation, that makes all the pain worth it... I can't stop it, it affects me emotionally. What better can you say about a "silly computer game"? 90/100 if you ask me. Yes. That good. With so little. (yes, this is a dublicate of a post I did in the fediverse; in case you wonder)
