Not quite a dungeoncrawler, not quite a deck-builder, and not quite Rogue (or 'Rogue-lite' by some definitions of what meta-progression is and isn't), but what is here is a superbly-executed combination of light RPG and Rogue-lite mechanics that is mechanically and aesthetically so dissonant from the aforementioned genres that they are more familiar suggestions than accurately-descriptive terms. There is also the owl. This is a 'card' game insofar as the deck is the level of the dungeon you are trawling through, with enemies, NPC's, loot, and obstacles visible in front of you at all times, with progression further into a run tied to flipping through the cards in front of you to either 'run' from a threat or to click on it to interact - meaning to usually attack - it. There's very little you can or will do to interact with this 'hand' in regards to what will come up and the game does not emphasize construction in that sense, it is very much *not* a card game in the mode of Slay the Spire so much as in its presentation. There is also the owl. Very addictive, very quick, and with a very wide variety of items to engage with the spread in front of you or manipulate your stats to accomplish the same end, with several extreme options you can stumble onto to wildly swerve an existing build or course correct into something feasible - with the *real* game starting after you complete a run for the first time, and get to choose different conditions and items with which to start as a result. There is also the owl. Ultimately I think it's still one of the best things Humble Games has published even four years later, as someone who has come back to the game sporadically since first trying its initial release, and in a solidly polished and complete state as of now, even if it's unlikely to get further updates in the near future. There is also the owl.

Ring of Pain is an intriguing and unique roguelike card game with a dark, yet captivating atmosphere. Every run feels different thanks to its randomization and the variety of enemies and items. The tactical decisions you make with each card flip keep you on your toes, and the balance between risk and reward adds depth to every playthrough. If you're into fun, strategy-based games with a twist of unpredictability, or just looking for something to play after Slay the Spire, this game is definitely worth diving into!

There are a number of roguelikes that try to imitate the most successful ones out there, but Ring of Pain is the real deal. If you're interested in being challenged to make calculated strategic choices, Ring of Pain delivers nicely. The titular 'ring' stage layout offers a unique twist on combat and the strategy has been highly calibrated. The game does, however, share some weaknesses with StS and virtually all games in the genre. It offers only hints at a plot; if a strong story is important to you then you'll have to look elsewhere. It also struggles to create a challenging final scenario despite offering two separate endgame paths; in my experience if you get off the ground early on you'll cruise through the ending without too much trouble. You're still required to pay attention and play well, but you'll usually scale to be more than strong enough for the finale. Overall, Ring of Pain offers a variety of ways to play through many unique, well-balanced synergistic builds. For its innovative strategic concepts, well-polished basics and careful balancing, it deserves recognition as one of the leading games in the turn-based roguelike genre.

Ring of Pain beckons players into a dark and twisted labyrinth of strategic card-based gameplay, offering a uniquely haunting experience that will captivate both newcomers and veterans of the genre alike. At its core, Ring of Pain is a roguelike dungeon crawler with a card-based combat system. However, it's the game's sinister atmosphere and innovative mechanics that truly set it apart. From the moment you step into its eerie world, you're enveloped by an atmosphere of dread and mystery, fueled by haunting visuals and a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack. The gameplay mechanics of Ring of Pain are refreshingly deep yet accessible. As you navigate through each procedurally generated dungeon, you'll encounter a myriad of cards representing enemies, items, and traps. Every decision you make is crucial, as one wrong move can spell doom for your character. Will you risk engaging in combat with a powerful foe, or opt for a more cautious approach, sneaking past them to conserve your resources? One of the most compelling aspects of Ring of Pain is its emphasis on risk versus reward. Every choice you make carries consequences, whether it's choosing to open a mysterious chest or delving deeper into the darkness in search of greater rewards. The tension is palpable as you weigh the potential benefits against the very real dangers that lurk around every corner. Visually, Ring of Pain is a masterpiece of dark and macabre artistry. The hand-drawn illustrations are beautifully grotesque, with each enemy and environment exuding a sense of foreboding. Combined with the atmospheric sound design, the game creates an immersive experience that will leave you on edge throughout your journey. While Ring of Pain may not be for everyone due to its challenging difficulty and unforgiving nature, those who appreciate a cerebral and atmospheric gaming experience will find much to love here. With its addictive gameplay, stunning visuals, and haunting atmosphere, Ring of Pain is a journey into darkness that's well worth taking.

A very fun roguelike, Ring of Pain feels amazing once you get a hold of the basic mechanics. While at times it can feel a bit luck based, overall it feels a lot more skill based than the vast majority of other roguelikes. Learning how and when to move is the largest skill I felt myself getting better at while playing, and is one of the largest keys to winning a run. Along with that, knowing what stats to increase, how certain items can synergize, and reducing the ramifications of luck are other big contributing factors to winning a run. All of this makes it feel like skill is required to win, instead of blind luck getting certain items that might or might not synergize with your build. The only form of meta-progression is unlocking new items along with different starting candles, meaning you don't feel as if it's a grind just to get a single win. Some of the unlockable items are extremely powerful, but I didn't feel as if I couldn't do a challenge without a specific one. Although, some achievements are painful without specific candles, mostly the x class only ones.
